• I have a dilemna...need opinions/advice...

I was at a Trader's Village today and this one little shop who primarily sells vintage home stereo and speaker cabinets had a few guitars on the wall, two cheapos and one 1996 Gibson Les Paul Special double cutaway in classic Gibson yellow with Texas Special humbuckers for $375...now this price may be negotiable, but the headstock has been broken before and repaired, and sturdiness of the headstock isn't a problem, but the quality of the appearance of the repair IS...would this be a decent deal to resell for a profit? Or would it be worth my while to just have that area sanded and repainted (I know a guy whose complete headstock repair/repaint is $150) and hold on to it to resell later on or even the near future? I have a feeling it may even still be there tomorrow or even next weekend (the place is only open weekends)...

I'd say its worth it, maybe better @ 325... you could prolly make a profit off ebay.

Agreed, buy it as cheaply as possible and throw it right up on the bay. I want to say 'with a $750 BIN', but that would be unseemly

I wouldn't give anything over $300 for it. It has zero resale value, so after the $150 to make it look better, you've got $450 in it.
It's probably a cool guitar (I'm a sucker for Les Paul Jr.s!), but be careful. You won't make a profit on it.

It has resale value. People on Ebay go for this stuff because they cost less. I saw a broken headstock LP Studio go for about 500 dollars. Thats pretty good for something thats broken and fixed, the repair wasn't that good looking either.

Well, yeah it has value, I just wouldn't get into it thinking I could flip it and make a buck. That's a really hit or miss market for you.

My point was it's probably a cool guitar, and if you wanted it for a keeper and a player, that's a pretty cheap price for starters.

Tough call...I've seen these go anywhere from $650-$1100 in good to mint condition. TV Yellow will definitely attract more attention than other specials. What are Texas Special humbuckers? Gibson put P-90 single coils in the double cuts that year, unlike the single cuts which had P-100 stacked humbuckers.

well, I bought it today for only $300, the only real blemish is the paintover on the repair (the rest of the guitar practically looks untouched), and I'm gonna get that fixed up, shouldn't be more than $100 total, since the repair is already done, and this is more or less just a minot refinish, because to re-break, repair and repaint it costs $150 through one of the most reputable pair/luthiers in town, so I thought I'd post some pics:

i think i did pretty damn good...

Looks cool! Personally, I wouldn't bother even having it touched up. Just play the hell out of it!!

the other thing that surpises me is that this is the only double cutaway flat top that has dual humbuckers AND gold hardware...I haven't seen any of the TV Yellow double cuts with gold hardware...

Yeah, I thought that seemed a little strange, too. Maybe post on the Les Paul Forum and see if someone could shed some light.

I believe its gold because once the guitars headstock snapped, the person took all the hardware off and sold it. Then someone rebuilt it.

Thats the same case with my Headstock snapped les paul..

                              Hmm...

Have you popped the pickups out? Or the electronics cover? I'm wondering if that was modded for humbuckers - you usually see these with P-90's.

Either way it's a very kickass guitar for $300.

http://www.lespaulforum.com is a great resource. Good folks over there too.
