my first guitar was a 1984 MIJ Fender Squire Telecaster, black w/ black pickguard and maple neck. I loved it of course, and always kept it. I played it for a few years in college and it was fun, but I learned by their performance that the electronics were crummy. and the neck had the vintage tiny wire frets and so it sucked in that respect. I pulled it apart in 1987 when I got my.... red Model 2. I was thinking I'd put a good neck on it, perhaps a reverse pointy, etc. well that never happened of course. I then put some stickers on the body that I later regretted.
anyway, now after it has been sitting for 18 yrs, I refinished it this summer.
BEFORE
the only thing I saved from the original guitar was the body. the frets on the og neck had corroded over years sitting in the case in my garage.
the finish was shot. I had to sand it off, probably used too coarse of grit now upon reflection, but hey, live and learn.
SANDED
then I primered it, and painted it a really dark charcoal car paint from rattlecans.
this was a learning process, let me tell ya. aggravating at times having to go back over mistakes, sand them out, etc.
my animals have to check it out
NOW WET SANDING THE CLEAR COAT
it ended up with a satin finish, which looks different. I had to start over a couple times too, on various segments of the job. it was not easy.
got a birdseye/birdseye neck from Warmoth with 22 jumbos, Grover locking tuners, Seymour Duncan Lil '59 in the bridge and Quarter Pound in the neck.
had my luthier put it all together and viola! my old Tele is reborn in a much upgraded custom version. and it plays great! I can get that Hendrix tone.
