Re: new gmw headstocks

Jon, I can't believe you beat me to the punch! I just got back from visiting with Lee for an hour, where I too saw and held the protoypes of the new necks. It's not a myth or rumor. Progress is being made, but the hold-up has been due to all of the work Lee is putting into this venture. It's much more than simply cutting new headstock designs and slapping them on pre-fabricated bodies. He's creating an entire line of guitars, from basic, "classic" hot-rod single hums + Floyd up to true "blue sky" creations which incorporate 21st century cutting-edge engineering and design. Progress is being made, but I encourage everyone to be patient as I believe the final results will blow everyone's socks off.

I think that what GMW is doing is what Charvel/Jackson should have done back when, before Grover first sold the company. I can see a day when all of the GMWs we currently own are considered "Pre-serialized" and possibly more collectible, because this new vision that Lee has for GMW might take off in a way that exceeds his expectations.

Re the headstocks, my preference is for the Millenium 04 version. The Traditional version has a Tele feel to it, whereas the Millenium contains hints of Jackson, Yamaha and Ibanez to my eyes. The descriptions previously given are more or less accurate. Lee is still tweaking them a bit, and revamping the website, so it's going to be a minute before it's all ready. He's still swamped though...guitars crowding the shop up the wazoo.

I can't give away everything he told me today under penalty of death, but...those of you who love Camo graphics won't be disappointed by some of the new designs...including translucent stains over etched hot-rod flames atop figured wood tops.

Oh man, this sounds cool. Any idea on when we're gonna see all this stuff, a few months or less hopefully?

Is he accepting new orders yet, or is that still on hold until the update goes public?

                        Re: new gmw headstocks

AFAIK, there's no moratorium on new orders. Some of the guitars from the upcoming first run of twenty have been presold. Call or email Lee for specific information re placing new orders.

Something else he told me I could share. The new, upgraded website will feature a virtual generator where you can see how different combinations of features, including headstocks and paint, will look before placing an order. The website will also contain information on each signed and serialized guitar built by GMW, including photos, build dates and availability.

                          Re: new gmw headstocks

it is in my opinion that by NOT showing the headstock, it is hindering pre-sales of the new line. I'm not foolish enough to drop $1200-1600 (or whatever they are going for) in something someone else says is "a nice looking headstock"

I'll wait and let my eyes determine where my money goes next. I'll buy used ones with the already known "super cool" headstock design.

                              Re: new gmw headstocks

Shawn, your opinion is valid and reasonable. If it were me and I hadn't seen the prototypes, I wouldn't order a new one sight-unseen, based on the opinions and preferences of others, either. However, I believe that is more or less the point of why the new designs, even sketches, have NOT been released yet. Not to speak for him, but Lee is planning long-term for this and won't put it out there until everything is ready. I don't think he's really concerned with pre-selling any of the new guitars as of yet, and he's still working through his extensive backlog of orders and new stuff that's still coming in...so he's busier than ever. The FMIC C/D thing did nothing to slow down GMW's production...

He knows that everyone is waiting to see the new stuff. I think that's one reason why he's allowed people like Jon and myself to share information about the upcoming line, to assure everyone he isn't just bullshitting. Lots of time and $$$ have been invested in making sure things are done right, and still more work to be done on stuff I can't even talk about publicly (not trying to be cute, just saying it's a lot more going on than just the headstocks).
