I'm interested to see the difference on the nice birseye versus the next level up.

At least I know where I will be getting my next neck from!

Re: Musikraft neck for Warren D Skull&Blood project??

Ok. My Musikraft neck has arrived.

Let me first say that I am very pleased with the build quality. Everything is nicely finished. Frets are really nicely done. Dot inlays look really cleanly & evenly installed. Fret board edges have a really nice rolled over feel.

This really feels quite a bit like the neck on my GMW RedRum Strathead.....so I'm pleased.

However......look at the pics.
There were three grades of birdseye maple available......Average grade, Select grade, & Premium Grade.

I went with Select grade.
My neck, in my opinion, has very little birdseye. I know that if I wanted ultimate birdseye, I should have ordered Premium grade.......but to me......this just doesn't even look "Select".

If I had ordered Average grade & got this....I would have just thought.....Oh well....should have ordered Select grade, no big deal.

But.....

Maybe I am being overly critical here. This was only a $45 upgrade....as opposed to Premium which was a $70 upgrade. Although these pics actually do seem to make the neck look a little better than it is.

Really a great feeling neck though.

I got in my second Musikraft in today. I ordered the exact same specs as the first one but there is a major difference in amount of birds-eye on the newer one, the first one has more birdseye on its headstock than the second one has on the entire neck. I paid exactly the same as the first one too.

I'm going to see what the deal is tomorrow but I'm not too happy about it. I feel if I paid the same, each neck should have equal the amount of birdseye.

hey bstef, did you order the neck as raw wood? if so, go get yourself some golden oak tinted watco danish oil, and apply it to the neck. it'll give it a nice warm tint, and it'll bring the figuring out more. if you ordered the neck sealed, you'd of course have to strip it, but that WILL help bring it out a lot. i was given that tip by a guy who sure knows his stuff, and man, he was right.

Not sure why but this scene from "CASINO" popped in my head as I was reading your post.

ACE: Look at that. Look at this. There's nothin' . . . look how many blueberries your muffin has and how many mine has. Yours is falling apart. I have nothing.
GREEN: What are you talking about?
ACE: It's like everything else in this place. You don't do it yourself, it never gets done.

GREEN: Where you goin'?

ACE, GREEN and the BAKER are gathered around the BAKER's counter surrounded by muffin tins and batter.

ACE: (Handing the BAKER the two muffins) From now on I want you to put an equal amount of blueberries in each muffin. An equal amount of blueberries in each muffin.
BAKER: You know how long that's going to take?
ACE: I don't care how long it takes. Put an equal amount in each muffin.

lol slash, true I remember that scene too.

If there is that much a decrepancy in the amount of birdseye in that grade then I wouldn't have ordered the second one with that option nor would I pay for the next option up. There is a huge difference between the two in the same grade.

Sully,

I did order it sealed with Nelsonite. I was thinking though of rubbing it with some kind of oil to try to enhance the color a bit....maybe that's a lost cause with the sealer already on it?

Shawn,

That's interesting to hear of such variation with two necks of the same grade.

What do you think of mine, birdseye wise? Am I being a total whiner here? I'd like to see pics of yours.

I'm looking at my pics posted here...& they really make the neck look better than it does in person. The neck actually looks really plain with just a little sparse birdseye from the front....and on the back of the neck there are just a few birdseyes on one side of the skunk stripe....the other side of the stripe is almost completely birdseye free.

I totally expected a more figured neck. I've been debating on whether I should complain to Musikraft or not.
Any thoughts...Shawn or anyone?

If the neck already has Nelsonite on it, the oil will not be absorbed.

Regarding birdseye grade levels, keep this in mind: Birdseye (and Quilt and Flame) is a disease in the wood. It looks cool, but it ruins the structural integrity of the grain. With the Charvel 25th Anniversary models (and anything else we use figured maple on), Mike Shannon hand selected high grade birdseye blanks with an eye towards CONSISTENCY through the blank (front to back and side to side). Inconsistent birdseye pattern = inconsistent stability. If there is a lot of "eyes" on one side, but not the other, you could be in for problems. The less "eyes" you have, the less you have to worry about this.

Regarding more birdseye in one neck vs another, but both cost the same, you'll have to ask Musikraft.

bsteff666 your neck pictured has more than my second one but less than my first. I asked Jim about the descrepancy in the amount of birdseye and he said the planks are separated by grades and when they cut the neck you can lose a lot of the figuring as it ends up on the floor I guess the best way to assure you get the most amount of birdseye is to select premium grade. I'll stll do business with them but I'll either go the premium grade or none at all.

I went with tung oil finish on both of mine, I added a little boiled linseed oil and it brough it out on my first neck. I'll see if I can take some pics...

Ok.....I finally got around to finishing this one. She came out pretty good.

I got to play her live this weekend & I was very pleased. That neck really plays nice. I went with my favorite Duncan Custom 5 pickup......really great tone in this guitar...it screams as you would expect....but there are some really great tonal nuances when you really dig into the strings.....kind of a touch of that half open wah feel.....if you know what I mean.

Yes.... I did logo this one...its a Warren D replica.....so I felt like I had to make it complete....If I should ever sell it....I'll remove the logo.

These two look good together......Bloody Murder!

Is that a standard fender pocket guitar body and neck? Sweet guitar!
