Re: 80\'s Yamaha RGX series

I found a cool RG1203S in a pawnshop a while back. Neckthru, rear loaded S-S-S, dodgy trem. It was a cool guitar, but I don't know if wanted 3 single coils in a neckthru guitar. So rather than modify it, I left it for someone who would appreciate it as it was. Plus I could find absolutely NO information on that model online.

Shortly after, I found my 550XL for considerably less. Perfick!

              Re: 80\'s Yamaha RGX series

What was the Yamaha series I remember seeing in an 80's guitar mag, that seemed to be Yamaha's answer to Ibanez. I seem to recall they were also called RG-Z but the only RGZ's I've seen have that weird shaved headstock and goofy shaved cutaways like this RGZ. (211?)

The ad featured 2 guitars with a metal flake finish and matching metal flake headstock with a large black YAMAHA logo and I guess there may or may not have been some metal poseur(s) de jour from that era hawking them. In any event I never see these guitars (whatever they were). I always see the common varieties with the headstocks that bug me (with the exception of the Pacifica series which I like and own). I guess the Blue Saraceno model pictured here looks similar to what I am talking about. Basically I am wondering what Yamaha model the Blues Saraceno model was based on.

The headstock is the notable difference as well with the larger block Yamaha logo than the Pacifica Series or the RGX / RGZ's shown in others posts in this thread.

What year were these made and why are they so hard to find?

They were made for a short time & it was when the RGX series was just dieing to bring the RGZ series to life to compete with Ibanez. I'm not sure on the year & Blues was only endorsed by Yamaha for the series for 2 years. Then Ibanez grabed him for a short time.

                  Re: 80\'s Yamaha RGX series

So was there an RGZ model before the guitars I am talking about? The first guitar I pictured is an RGZ right? I could have sworn these were around in the mid to late 80's, and then I guess the second and rare generation of the RGZ is the ones I am referring to, that came late 80's early 90's? Has anyone ever seen one of these models on ebay or for sale anywhere... ever?

                    Re: 80\'s Yamaha RGX series

The RGZ was mid 80's the RGX was early 80's. The Blues Plaid guitar came in 2 finish's blue plaid & green like above, & were both RGZ models.

                      Re: 80\'s Yamaha RGX series

I did a search on Harmony Central and the closest to what I am referring to is the RGZ Custom, and apparantly was only available in Japan, so no wonder I ever saw one.

I have seen the RGZ 112p and RGZ 321p which are similar to the Custom but have pickguards and strat vintage style trems and look cheap in comparison (Korean or Chinese?)

The RGZ820 sort of looks like an newer RGX420 (3x3 headstock) only with a flame top finish, which are completely different guitars than the Blues Saraceno type from the early 90's making me wonder why they still used the RGZ moniker.

The RGZ 211M doesn't even seem like an RGZ 321P due to the cutaway differences and the headstock yet these were from the same era relatively speaking.
