Re: good guitar for around $500-$700?

I have a 1989 DC125, our other guitarist has a mid-90s DC127, and our bassist just got a fretless XB75, so I may be a little biased That LTD does look cool though dude - any progress on finding a place for the refin?

I've only played a few carvin guitars, all amazing to me, but so didn't my Red eye full stack when I bought it and then so didn't the replacement that shat the bed shortly after). If you do go for a Carvin, I'd aim for an older one because I'm really unhappy with the quality of the equiptment that's been leaving thier factory the past few years... and I'm flat out pissed about thier customer service reps and the longevity of thier products.

Not sure if you've heard of Goratory (I'm sure you have if you frequent RTTP) but the singer Al's brother Julio might be doing the refinish for me, still waiting on the response. I was going to have Lee Garver of GMW do it.. but I just don't have enough cash for it and the waiting time on refinishing a guitar is very high. If worst comes to worse, I'll just have an auto body shop paint it an easier color... maybe trans red.

Alright. After hours of playing and deliberation, I have decided that I want the following in a guitar. I borrowed my neighbor's Ibanez S540 Classic. The neck on the guitar is the nicest neck I have ever played on. I want an Ibanez guitar with a neck similar to the neck on the S540. I would prefer something with a little more thick of a body, as the tone is a little thin. I am thinking an RG would do? Do they make one with the same neck but with the RG body? I guess it does not have to be brand new...

Thanks,

The neck on the Ibanez your talking about is called the 'wizard II' There is a similar, but thinner (I think) neck they make called the wizard.

Yes, they are VERY fast and comfortable feeling, but there are MANY horror stories about those necks and the super thin necks of the S series basses warping.
I don't think you will see very many functional S series guitars from this age on ebay in ten or so years.
They are too think for thier own good... but damn are they nice.

I don't think the wizard II neck is offered on RG models, but you can check ibanez's website because all of thier guitars have the neck specs posted on the site.

There is a line of S-type guitars with fixed bridges. I think both the regular S series and fixed bridge Ss are 24 or 24.5 inch scale though... good luck with those 14 guage strings if you want to drop tune.

eh.. funny thing about drop tuning is we decided to stay in drop C. I am using 10-52's again. They feel really light and are super easy to play after those ropes I was playing earlier. As long as I can play my neighbor's guitar, we are going to stay in Drop C. I am thinking I can have a neck made for me if I can get ahold of an RG body?

Oh man.. I am more confused than a bisexual at an orgy. I would really like another Ibanez, but I HATE the floyd. I think they make an S and an RG with no floyd, but I believe they are out of my price range. I looked at some of those schecters and the esp mentioned about. That looks like a killer guitar. As far as the schecters go, the C-1 elite and plus look really friggin nice. How do they play and sound? The price looks perfect, and there is a shop nearby that sells Schecter. Any advice or comments?

Thanks,

Well if there is a shop near you that sell Schecters you don't need any advice. Just go out and play!

I can tell you from my perspective Schecter will whup the ass of any Ibanez, and I too like thin necks. But definitely go play one.

If you are going to go with the shecter, pick yourself up a soldering iron two...

The factory jobs on the electronics don't last very long from the shecter imports I've seen. I've owned two stiletto basses and only one had that problem, but I have quite a few friends with schecters that have crappy pots, bad soldering, and static when turning the knobs. I also don't like how all of the schecter models are set neck and hardly offer any neckthroughs, and I don't like the heavy use of seymour duncan pickups and lack of EMGs.

Other than that, they are pretty ballsy guitars.

There is alot of misinformation in Niccolai's post.

There is at least one neck thru Schecter model I know of (C-1 Classic) I am sure there is more. Like ESP most of their guitars are set neck or set thru (from what I understand the set neck all access is the same as a set thru). They use EMG's on quite a few of their models. The Hellraiser series is EMG's as well as some of the others. Not to mention I'd take a Duncan over an EMG any day (thats a personal preference though).

Haven't had or know of anyone who has had problems with Schecter electronics beyond the usual dodgyness of import electronics in general. Both of my current import guitars have had to be resoldered in some way or another, it just happens and for those curious thats a Jackson and a BC Rich. ESP is notorious for it though, and my personal experience with them has been mostly in the way of bad fretjobs (sharp frets, not level, not seated properly etc). But when your dealing with imports this happens to any company because you don't have the level of QC that you do with a US smaller production facility.

Basically play the Schecter, play an ESP and anything else in the price range and let your fingers tell you whats best.

GMS, it would be worth your time to check out the Music Go Round store on Lexington Avenue up near Rosedale. They have Deans, Jacksons, Hamers and all kinds of other stuff in your price range. Guitar Center is nearby and has a lot of Schecter, Ibanez and Jackson stock.

My Music Store up on Hwy. 55 and Winnetka also has some good stuff in from time to time. Not a big shop, but definitely worth checking.
