• What to do? (GMW content)

Here's my story. I have had my new Suhr for a week now. Since it arrived, my GMWs have sat unplayed (for the most part). I have picked them up occasionally to play them to compare necks, and have noticed something somewhat alarming. The GMW necks are not nearly as comfortable as my Suhr. The Suhr neck is rounder and thicker, making both chording and soloing easier. The GMWs, as most people here know, are thinner and have a flatter back profile. I have noticed that they are not as comfortable now that I have the Suhr to play. This is my second Suhr. The first one I owned had a profile a little more comparable to the GMWs. I recently sold it to get one just like it except with a fatter, rounder neck.

I know this is still the honeymoon period, but I am seriously considering parting with the 4 GMWs that I have left. They are great guitars, two of which I bought personally from Lee from his private collection. I just don't see them getting much playing time, and would like to possibly replace them with a couple of Suhrs. Additionally, I do have two Les Pauls that I still play, and I'm not thinking of replacing them.

This is NOT a solicitation for offers for the GMWs, but a solicitation of opinions from members here on the board. Has something similar to this happened to anyone else?

Sorry so wordy. Thanks!

Why do you want all your guitars to feel the same? Vareity, my friend, IS the spice of life.
I have one guitar I care to play...the ONLY guitar I care to play. Whatever else I have around is just for fun (a good slide guitar), or a backup for live disasters.
I suppose if you want to have five or whatever identical guitars around, that's your business. I just find that limiting. It's not like you are on a world tour and need multiples of the same thing for redundent backups.

My wordy reply...sorry 'bout that!

I fight feelingslike this all the time. I never make quick decisions when this happens. When I got my first Anderson back in '98, I was ready to sell most of my collection and but a few more Andersons. I decided that I would put my other pieces on ice for awhile and revisit them later (mostly fender, gibson, and jackson). When I pulled them out again a few months later, I was very happy that I had kept them. Although my Anderson was still one of my favorites, most of the others were able to justify their keep due to their tonal differences.
So...although your GMW's don't feel as good to you as he Suhr's (a much better instrument IMO), do they bring something to the table tone wise that you don't get from the Suhr? Just something to think about.

The flip side of that point is to order more Suhr's that would get you closer tonally to what you are missing from the one you have.

If you decide to sell the GMW's, I'd love to see what you have

yep. well said chuck. Though I do have a few of one guitar model around but each one has diferrent tuning/setup or pickups in them. Variety is a good thing.

I wouldn't sell my other guitars. When I get a new guitar that I really like I'll play it and think my others just don't play as good, but soon or latter the newness wears off and my taste in guitars changes with my mood.

I love the super duper skinny and think neck on my Stealth HX.

Then I got my Ibanez Destroyer and Rocket Roll. Thicker necks. Totally different. Play like a dream.

My BCRs all have thicker necks, with the Wartribe being the thickest. At first I hated the Wartribe neck. In fact, I put it up for sale numerous times because of the neck. Then one day it felt perfect to me.

I still have honeymoons with all of my guitars. Don't sell the GMW's yet. I bet in a few years you'll buy something else and will think it plays better than the Suhr.

If you are anything like me, wait for a 3 month honeymoon period to end, before you do anything that you may not be able to replace later.

But, I agree that Suhrs are the pinnacle of bolt on guitars. The Robert Marcello model is a heart stopper.

If you still want to sell the GMW's after a 3 month period, I would sell 2 GMW's and order one of Robert Marcello models. If you have stratheads, you will kick yourself hard for ditching all of them.

What Chuck said.
I used to only love one certain thing but now I want 10 different things for 10 different sound and playability.
I'd enjoy the differences for good.

I guess some of this comes down to your financial situation, but if you can afford it: ditto on waiting for the honeymoon period to end (unless you have a really cool GMW I want, in which case, sell, sell, sell ).

I have 25 or so guitars and on one day I might totally love my GX bullseye, and want everything to be like that, but the next I'll pick it up and it'll sound a bit 'dead' so I'll grab a GMW, neck thru Jackson or whatever....

Variety Mark . Your taste and feel for guitars will change with your mood and what you are listening to .
Your GMWs have not become bad guitars overnight .

Hey Mark, Tim Krueger is selling 2 unreal Suhrs. When I was over his place I played them both and they are real sweet. If you need his e mail let me know.

I can understand that. If you have no attachment them do whatever you feel like doing. I like a variety but I keep more that 4 around I like pulling em off the wall one after another playing them each for a while. Although I prefer fatter profile necks its cool to have a variety. I have 1 5/8, 1 3/4, 1 11/16 with mediums up to super jumbo frets. The only thing consistent with me are OFR's and Hums. I can see your point about the fatter necks, the one musikcraft neck i have is nice and chunky, the one I ordered is nice and chunky and they just feel more comfortable oin my hands. I'll buy more of them as I phase out put my pointy headstocks.

Suhr's are great feeling guitars, great playing guitars and built guitars --I can certainly understand the Lay's effect, can't have just one imho the price differentials between them don't add up. They are not THAT much of an improvment in build quality over GMW's. They do retain their values hough, if you buy thme used you'll always get it back or more.

Ive played both. I really like the GMW better, they just seem to fit me. The Suhrs are really great guitars but your right they are not worth the price they ask for them. I think build quality is about the same. The suhrs just have a better finishing job. By that I mean they really go the extra mile to make sure the paint and setup and everything is perfect on the guitar. Where I have seen some finished GMW that had little flaws here and there. Like dust or dirt in the paint or not the best of sanding jobs.
