Re: Musikraft San Dimas replica

I think all points are valid. I, for one, am glad that a company makes parts similar to the classic Charvies, because I realistically could not afford a CS model. I just think that there's a certain "vibe" put off by a strat head model, kind of that "hot rodded Fender" vibe that was the main purpose of Charvel from the beginning. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as someone isn't trying to pass off a "knock off" as the real thing for the purposes of a personal gain, monetary or other wise...

I think it is very cool. I also don't see anything wrong with building a clone and using the logo for your own enjoyment. Until something priced reasonably from the mothership arrives to fill the void, this practice will continue.

OK...I've had some very reasonable answers about the Fender headstock.

Now, can anyone tell me why, as a Jackson/Charvel fan, you would pay a non-affiliated private entity for a decal that is an unauthorized illegal reproduction of our intellectual property?

Because it looks cool on there.

I'm not a fan of any guitar company. I am a fan of cool guitars, and the crowning touch for me is that name on a strat headstock, specifically a strat with all the right features, ie; Charvel style.

I assume you mean the waterslide decals and junk that you can get off ebay.

There is one good reason I can think of and this is probably not going to mean much since I imagine this isn't a common occurence anyways. If you have a charvel strathead and have it refinished at a place like say GMW. I can see if you had a headcap or matching paintjob put on the headstock that you would want to apply a Charvel decal. Thats the ONLY time in which I personally would use a decal.
Beyond that and what I said in my earlier post, about trying to replicate a guitar for the purposes of safety for touring, I can't say I can think of any legitimate reason.
However I think there are more than a few people who do it for that reason.

As to the rest? I can't give you a good answer. I can tell you though alot of people don't understand really what they are doing by applying a decal (in effect supporting an unauthorized copy that is in violation of intellectual property laws), I see this in alot of areas of "the arts" be it music, art, guitars or anything else. As I mentioned earlier I would bet people view the decal as a way of saying "I support this company" but really by putting it on a product that is NOT a charvel they are supporting the guy who stole your logo. All speculation though.

I know some people here have decaled their charvels, I'd be interested to hear from them too. I will say this though, I'd have no problem getting a decaled charvel copy off ebay if the guitar was nice enough. A nice guitar is a nice guitar, and I didn't apply the logo so I wouldn't feel bad about getting that as long as I knew up front that it wasn't the real deal.

No downloading songs illegally, no slapping our logo on your headstock, don’t do this, don't do that, can't you read the signs! Just imagine getting crucified for free advertising, most companies would pay big bucks to have their name showing up on stage.

most companies pay big bucks to protect their trademarks. most guitar companies also don't like having counterfeit guitars made. does your mom know that you're on the computer?

I think you are seeing this as a black and white issue. From your perspective, that makes sense.

There are shades of gray though.

I get why someone would want the Charvel logo on their guitar. It's a vanity thing.

Personally, I've never put a logo on a guitar at all.

But, I am getting an SD Rhoads refinished. I fully intend to put a Jackson logo on there. Where does Fender/Jackson stand on that?

Re: Musikraft San Dimas replica

good question, tim. i'd guess that the "correct" way to do that would be going the factory route in that your refin is done by c/j. i'd also guess that they care a lot less about that kinda thing, but i'm guessing.

ona semi related note, when you get a neck from warmoth, you get a warmoth logo for it. i was under the impression (which may be wrong) is that as soon as you logo a trademarked and licensed headstock, that's a problem. then again, if that were true, i wouldn't think that warmoth would include their logo. anyway, that's probably a stupid question, feel free to mr. t me!

I'd be glad to send it to the factory for a refin if I thought I'd see again in this millenium and I wouldn't have to sell my children into slavery to pay for it

Maybe this is more common than I thought! That is EXACTLY the point I was trying to get across in regards to refins of stratheads and relogoing.

If there was a way to get an authorized "relogoing" by J/C would you go that route even if it was just a little more expensive than just buying a cheapy decal? I'm not saying this would be feasible but I'm kinda curious.

I can see both sides on this issue. From the stance of most guitar buyers to them "its just a logo man!". To John and the employee's at C/J it is their name and someone else is making money from it. Its tough. Because of my job I can see John's perspective as a guitar buyer I am more than familiar with the "its just a logo!" mentality. I think you have it Tim, there are some shades of grey but I think its tough for people on opposing sides to see it that way.

well, as long as there are companies who put out a product, there will be people that are willing to make knock offs of said product. in some ways, it's kinda like the internet; many people believe that what's appearing on their monitor is theirs, and think nothing of swiping people's images and hard work for their own use.

Here's a better answer tell J/C to start producing reasonable priced strat head guitar with the Charvel logo on the headstock with some cool graphics. Then maybe fans would stop buying elsewhere and start buying real ones! And not some $4000 dollar anniversary guitar!
