• Parts Guitars

Ever since I started building guitars, and gotten pretty decent at it. I'm not sure I would buy a brand new guitar off the rack, even if it was exactly what I wanted.

Who else builds guitars from parts, new or used? Newc?

Just curious. I think building has become a bigger hobby than playing

Re: Parts Guitars

I built a couple of guitars from parts. It's fun, but I definitely don't have the skills to finish a body and make it look really nice. So, in the end, it makes more sense for me to get a complete guitar and swap the parts out as I see fit.

I do, I've built a bunch of them. I got away from it for a while, my tastes changed (woods and headstocks) and now I'm back to building them again Once I get back to where I'm happy with my arsenal and can focus on playing again -- I'll be a happier man I don't mind buying a new or used guitar as long as it gives me exactly what I want out of a guitar, so far 2x with GMW's

Yeah Travis, although I can do finish work, I'm too lazy and its too much work so I have been outsourcing that part of it

My main every day player is a parts mutt that I built. I have 3 projects in the works right now...I'll get some pics up in the near future.
It's alot of fun building them and you get exactly what you want.

Re: Parts Guitars

I mainly build from parts or repair broken guitars. Get the parts wherever I can, but try to use as high quality stuff as I can. Now, I'm into repair and refinishing. I get them, fix them, play them for a while and then sell them. It eats into my playing time, but playing something that you worked on yourself is much more gratifying, even if the time spent playing is less.

Re: Parts Guitars

At this point, I'm a "parts collector" rather than a "parts builder" mainly because I haven't put together any of them yet! I have done a few small mods and have a number of "works in progress". I think it's cool, enjoy learning about how to do it....

Speaking of parts guitars, I have been yearning for a 1 Hum parts guitar of some sort. Jack.

Me too, Me Too! Patrick to you forget me? I built my first guitar in 1985 and started again in 2002. It's fun. I've got 3 projects going right now and I think I own practically everything in the Stewart-MacDonald catalog.

I love building my own guitars from parts. Right now I have a DKMG project going. Can't wait to finish it. Right now it is all done and ready for paint. I have been taking pics of the progress and you will see a thread on it within the next month probably.

HOLY CRAP Dave...that is the first acoustic that has me drooling all over!! i own 23 or so guitars and not one acoustic and that one is just my stlye. i'm a bit of a strat headstock snob with my guitars but a pointy looks sweet on that. NICE WORK!!

as for me my main guitar is a parts guitar and i have 3 or 4 more and am building 2 now...soon to be 3. i just can't stop, i have just as much fun, if not more fun building them as i do playing them. also, now that i found an amazing painter all my ideas can come to life!
