Re: Got my work cut out for me....

    Disclaimer :
The workt that is being done is by a noobie. I am not expecting anything out of this. If I am screwing up, please tell me. But, please don't laugh too hard

So, almost all the body work has been done. Drilled, cut, filled and lots of learning on the way.

First lesson learned. It is best to flange out what you are going to fill that way there is a progression between the wood and the filler. Score anything that you are going to fill to give it something to stick too.

So, first thing that I worked on was the body. I cut peices of wood glued them into the single coil pickup cavities. After that was done, it was time for major bondo job. after three fills, it turned out pretty good. The control cavity, I was debating on doing dowels. But, instead, I ended up taping the inside of the cavity and filling. There just wasn't enough bite for dowles. I was afraid of slitting and breaking the control cavity. After it dried, I went ahead and removed the tape and appied a very hard epoxy to the inside of the control cavity to make it more secure. The body and control cavity are shown below. Since I am not staining the guitar, I really dont care about anything other then it is smooth and will hold the primer properly. Pretty much turned out as smooth as a baby's ass.

    inside of the cavity...

The second job was the neck... I went ahead and scored the frets (just to clean them up), filled the back, and the nasty ass chip in at the tip. It has been sanded and I think it is pretty good to go. The back is also going to be painted and also have a design put on the back of the headstock. I also gotta drill the holes for the new tuners. Gotta make a block pattern for that so that they end up being drilled straight. Fun times =) Along with that, I decided that I wanted to polish the neck just to see what I was dealing with. It actually isn't too bad at all. Lemon oil did the trick. Anyways, here are the pics.

Things left to do inorder to do mockup...

    1 - Find a input jack.
    2 - Order/investigate pickup.
    3 - Drill
4 - Measure nut, order Floyd Rose.

I gotta admit one thing. I am completely confused on what to get from seymore duncan. I want to have a pickup with serious lynch attack and drive. but, I am mildly confused my their custom page. I might have to give them a call and ask a rep for some help.

    But, it is coming along....

Looks like you are doing a great job so far. The epoxy backup is a good idea, although I usually fill the surface of the entire cavity to prevent any possible lifting of the epoxy. This may be overkill however.

        Fuck....

I should have been smarter. I was doing a pre-assemble. I was looking at the neck this morning and I left it on the kitchen counter. While I was at work, I think the cat knocked it off the counter. Looks like there is going to be a unexpected repair job now =(

Totally blame myself for that one...

The neck was not mounted on the body, thank friggen god. It was sitting on the counter. The only thing I can think of was that while I was at work, he got up there and claimed the counter as his own by knocking it off somehow.

Funny thing, the cat is pretty damn big.

Kramer necks always break at the point. At least it is a clean break, just glue it and it will be as good as new; at least better that it snapped now than after you refinished it.

Heh. My cat is pretty big, too, but he doesn't dare go on the counter any more. He doesn't like when I squirt him with the water bottle that now sits on the counter!

My cat loves water and basically begs to be squirted with the bottle. He received many flea/tick baths when we first adopted him 6 months ago from some neighbors that abandoned him. I caught him using my fender for a scratching post and spanked him for about 30 seconds continuous. Since then he has a strange reverence for my guitars. He will not even walk through the shadow of one, LOL.

                                Re: Fuck....

Nate's right. If you own a cat, you know better than to leave something where a cat can knock it down and break it.
Sorry to see it, but like Sully said it't a clean break and after the repair it'll be stronger than the rest of the neck. Thank your cat for the extra sustain the epoxy will give that neck. I smashed an Epi Melody maker into 4 pieces(body in half, neck off body, body off of headstock!) and a friend doweled and glued that thing back together. It played and stayed in tune better than before, more sustain too! Didn't sound as warm, but that 8 oz. of epoxy kinda tookj the warmth from the mahogany. It still played great 2 years later when I sold it. That break will be unnoticeable especially if it's gonne be all black. I would drill and dowel it for max strength.
                                Ron is the MAN!!!!
