• Need an affordable bass, what to buy?

I've been recording my music for awhile now, and I'll be laying down some bass tracks soon.

I want to buy an affordable, decent quality bass guitar.

I played quite a few Schecters (not like their lower low ones, but their neck through one (4 string) and then a few of their bolt ons (4 and 5 string). They were punchy and had tons of output.

I played a few Fender basses, a few four string Jazz basses, and then 2 five string squiers. I didn't like the Squier Jazz bass, the strings were pretty damn far apart, but then I liked the Squier MB5 bass...problem with it was, it had no god damn output.

Those were the only two companies I've got to try.

Any suggestions? I may just try and snipe a Fender or Schecter 5 string off of eBay, but wanted to see if there was something I was missing out on, by maybe someone who plays bass.

There are lots of choices. Peavey has some good ones from what I've heard. I haven't played the lower end Fender's or Schecter's. I personally have a '97 American Std. Jazz bass which is awesome and a '57 Fender American Custom Shop Precision. The Precision's neck is a little wider which is cool, but I like the skinny neck on the Jazz bass a little better especially going from guitar and back.

      What's your budget?

I'd strongly suggest the ESP B154 or B155

I could buy a nice high end if I wanted, however I want to keep this in the low range. I'm more than likely going to use eBay as my medium, but I don't want to spend more than 2-300 hundred, especially since, I've got no desire to be a bass player, just to record with.

Find an 80's Guild Pilot bass, they're usually about 350 or less with the original hard cases and EMGs. They are awesome basses, and at the price they are a steal. They have thin necks, and are extremely easy to play as well. 5 strings are currently getting 550ish, which is also good for a USA made bass.

also look into EB/MM Sub basses, Peavey Cirrus
            1+2 = McGuirk, 2+4 = She's hot, 6-4 = Happy McGuirk

I need something that feels decent, and sounds decent. I liked the feel of the Schecters, and as much as I hate to say it, the Squier MB5. The MB 5 though, had ass electronics.

the ESP LTD B154 and 155 have a comfortable 34 inch scale, probably feel more 'at home' for a guitar player, has an active booster, nicely thin neck, six bolts... great bass.

I suggest either a Carvin bass or an OLD ESP (earlier 90's Japan made) bass. They can be had for cheap and are great.

Believe it or not, the low-end Washburn Bantam basses are pretty nice. I owned one years ago for playing AIC-style stuff, and more recently my wife bought one. A couple of other local guys gig with them. If you can, there's even a Grover Jackson model from back in the `90s that I recall being pretty nice and inexpensive.

I like Charvel basses myself, but maybe it's just that pointy headstock.

Ive got an Ibanez BTB375qm and thats a gorgeous bass. Mid-rangey as hell, and has an active pre amp. 36" scale took some getting used to though especially going straight from guitar to bass.
