+1 on the Fender Mexi-P. I had one and it sounded great, especially through an ADA MP-1.

You might wanna crank the pickups closer to the strings, but for solid punchy tone for under $300, grab one, or a Charvel Model.

honestly, I spent 129$ on a Dean bass (import), and im prety happy with it. It's very simple, a basic 4 string with one pup, but it sounds good and plays pretty decent. I didnt neeed anything high end as its for basic stuff, but for 130$, im more then happy and its NOT a piece of crap!
