I'm still looking for a new guitar and I'd like to know what you think of the Gibson V, Explorer and LP

I like Adam Jones' tone, even if I really don't play his style of music. I love Jon Shaffer as well from Iced Earth and they seem to have a common really big tone. They both use LPs but I'd like to know what will be the main differences between a LP Custom and the other 2 I mentioned

thanks ... I know it's vague ...

Re: Gibson

To start...LP's are 2 1/4" thick, whereas V's and Explorers are 1 5/8"
MAJOR difference tonally! I personally love the 3 you've mentioned. They all share Mahogany bodies, and that's where most of your tone is coming from (some here will disagree with me) but the other 1/2 of your tone is in the electonics.

If you like AJ's, or JS's big tone...go with an LP...fatter and darker than a V or an EXP.

I got a white Flying V this year and I love it. I was just playing it today in fact. plenty of sustain and the tone is killer! the neck and fretboard are perfect too.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

I have a couple Les Pauls and an explorer. Right now the explorer is my number one. Almost the tone of my LP custom, and not quite as heavy on the shoulder. Plays like butter too, plus looks mean! As much as I like the couple soloists I have, I keep going back to the Gibsons for my main guitars.

3 LP's and 2 SG's. I had these before stocking up on Jacksons.

My #1 is my Historic R0.

can anybody compare the Kelly to the Explorer ?

and can you get somewhat of a similar tone to a LP with any Jackson USA ?

Strangely enough, my Japanese Jackson KE3 had seriously fat Les Paul tone. And then I eventualy bought this:

Todd,

How thin is that neck? Mine are a 1960 Reissue (duh) which has the fattest neck of the three, a 2002 60s necked Standard, and a 1996 Classic Premium Plus (thinnest).

I've been looking for a Custom, but I'm afraid of fat necks.

Oh, and the reason it sounds so good is that you probably have a long tenon neck

I have a white Gibson Flying V '67 RI, I love it. I am planning to get an old Faded V and a Faded SG with ebony board eventually.

Re: Gibson

Early this year I got a new LP Custom. I haven't had too many guitars so take this for what it's worth but it is the sweetest sounding guitar I've ever had. It literally almost brings tears to my eyes when I sit noodling around with it sometimes. I just got a SLATQH which has a spec sheet a lot like the custom, mahogany body and neck guitar with a maple top and an ebony fretboard. At first I thought with the neck pickup on (Duncan JB) it had a little Gibson mojo going but after putting some more serious hours on it I have to retract that.

My opinion comparing the two factory stock guitars is that the LP is more versatile and has a better tone possiblities overall than the Jackson but Jackson has a much faster neck and a better and brighter distorted sound.

It is probaly about the same as the 2002 with the 60's neck, not as thin as the classic, i did have a standard with 60's neck and from what i can remember they are about the same.

Oh dont get me wrong, my regular LP custom sounded just as good, but the neck was a little to thick for me. i do see what you mean about how they take more care, the bridge and stop tail are alot lower, with my regular custom i could not get the strings to stop touching the back of the bridge unless i kept that stop tail very high. With this guitar the stop tail is all the way down to the wood and not even close to touching the back of the bridge. I prefer the stop tail all the way down, i think it gives you a thicker tone.

A set neck all mahogany guitar will have the biggest thump in the world, my personal favorite and my next guitar, not sure of brand though. Maybe a CS Jackson JJ with all mahogany and a set neck and just 1 humbucker, probably an OBL L500XL. Jack.
