why set neck over neck-thru ?

    [/ QUOTE ]

The million dollar question right there. To tell you the truth i think the gibsons have so much thump just for the fact that there is so much wood! As to sustain between a set neck and neck thru i personaly dont think there is that much difference and to most people not even noticible.

One other thing about neck thru's, most seem to be some sort of hard wood like maple or walnut then with wings of some sort, either alder or mahogany and that might be why there is not as much thump. Of course the jackson neck thru's where using all mahogany, i wonder how they sounded.

      Re: Gibson

I can compare the two. I have my bare wood ESP neck-thru (maple / alder wings) with a single OBL L500XL, and my Gibson Historic. The Historic seems to gush overtones and complexity, while the ESP is like a piano - sharp and smacks you in the face.

These differences are not huge, they are subtle and could be attributed to the differences in pickups or scale lengths.

That gush you hear is actually the sound of your money being ripped out of your pocket for the amount you paid for it

But serious, i dont think anyone can do a fair comparison unless they use the same pickups since they make a huge difference in tone.

So don, turn your butt around and put the same pickups in both guitars and then come back like a good little boy and give us a review

I have a 81 V and a 86 Explorer. I have owned them both for upwards of 20 years. I am a big fan of these models. Now I am just getting into the Rhoads guitars.

Since you have a new LP Custom, you must know the sound of the gush as well

Ah, it wasn't that much money, but I could have bought a pair of SL2H's for the price.

I know, I need an extra Burstbucker 1 and 2. I'd like to put these in my other lesters to see if it's the pickups or something else.

The NASL is mahogany neckthrough with mahogany wings, and there's a definite "darker" Gibsonish tone than most other maple-necked Jacksons, even neckthrough.

                  Re: Gibson

Pretty much every single aspect of a guitar's construction will effect tone one way or another, good or bad. Anyone who thinks differently should strum a guitar wide open and try and find a spot on the guitar that doesn't reverberate. Change any aspect of a guitar and you change the way it reverberates. Even 2 guitars built exactly the same can sound different since no 2 pieces of wood are the same. IMHO, the biggest tone factors are pickups and neck/fretboard wood.
