I guess compete isn't the appropriate word. They don't have the sales and distribution network, manufacturing abilities to capture market share, hell they don't advertise or try to compete. They cater to a niche market of individuals. They are not out to conquer the world of the Fender/ESP/Ibanez's selling PoS import guitars to 13yr olds at $129.00 price point GMW isn't going anywhere and will have plenty of business from existing customers and new customers obtained from word of mouth.

Dont leave out the sorely lacking customer service and tact when dealing with people.......

I personally wouldnt spend a dime calling him, let alone send him a guitar to f-ck up and then blow me off when he does. Not that it happened to anyone, of course. Just speculation.

Shawn, I can only go off my own experiences with Lee over the years, all which have been great from a product and customer service perspective - which obviously are completly opposite than yours

Re: The year is almost over and still no GMW...

I guess it all depends on our own personal experiences with GMW and also other guitars. I like GMWs and I like Suhrs too. To me, as long as a guitar plays well and sounds good, that is fine.

Yes...there are many guitars out there that are as good as GMWs, no one ever said they or any other guitar manufacture is the best.

Also, I know the Lee can be a bit rough around the edges. I had a hard time speaking with him when I first started having GMWs built in 1999 or 2000. But now, he will call me at work and chat for almost an hour or send me emails about anything that he feels like talking about....not just guitars.

what i am trying to say, is that Lee is actually a very cool guy to speak with. But then again,,,,that is my opinion. These are all opinions.

LOL!
That is what Lee said when I asked what he thinks of Orange color Strat.. he said "YAWN" and my idea was deleted.

Re: The year is almost over and still no GMW...

My main concern on this issue is the fact that we have been hearing over a whole year that "the new line will be released to the public at any time" and still we haven't seen anything. I can understand that there could be legal issue involve, but 12 monthhs for unveiling a headstock design? How could we make a purchase of a 1k plus guitar if we don't know how they are going to look?

it's funny how headstocks make, like, ALL the difference in how we percieve an instrument.

funny but true.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

Re: The year is almost over and still no GMW...

I think it's pretty simple. GMW is busy with other projects that are probably making a lot of money for Lee's little operation. When you're busy making guitars for famous people, and other famous people are bringing their guitars to you for repairs and custom work, getting your own line of guitars out the door might take a back seat.

Lee can be rough around the edges. The first time I called GMW, I hung up thinking "I'm never doing business with that guy", I basically thought he was an arrogant jerk. I talked a to a few people here on the forum and learned that he basically treats everyone that way until he knows who you are.

I am a small time customer, but the last time I made a purchase with GMW was a lesson in outstanding customer service. I emailed Lee on a Friday afternoon. Saturday morning around 9am my cell phone rings, it's Lee verifying what I wanted. He even reminded me of a few little details I left out and basically ended up giving them to me as I was already set on a certain price. Keep in mind this is 9am in Texas, it's 7am Saturday morning in California.

Re: The year is almost over and still no GMW...

This might sound harsher than I intend it to sound, so please don't take my following statement as criticism. But, to the best of my knowledge Lee never made any public statements asking anyone to wait on him to release his new designs or to change their ordering plans to accommodate his schedule. It seems like folks are irritated at him for not publicly showing the new designs yet, but...is that anger justified? Why jump off of the GMW bandwagon because the new designs aren't ready yet?

I'm not part of GMW's "inner circle," I don't have ALL of the answers. But I did help Lee with an aspect of the new line (not being secretive to be cute, just can't give details yet), so I know a little about what's happening. For reasons all his own, I think he wants to have everything together and ready to roll before showing off part of the line, i.e. headstocks or paint designs, just to satisfy everyone's curiosity. I will admit it's easier for me and the few others who've seen the heads to deal with the delay than it is for the rest of you, and I do understand the frustration because hell, I want to see the new line up and running and the redesigned website too! I guess my point is, to my knowledge (and I admit I might be wrong) Lee didn't ask anyone to put their orders on hold to wait for him. And I don't think that the delays should be seen as contempt or a lack of respect towards current or potential customers in any way.

At this point, I can almost guarantee that when you all see the new heads, the universally silent response will be deafening. Not because they suck but just because nothing could live up to such high anticipation. But just know that the headstocks are only a part of whole equation.
