Gibsons are OK. But I find mahogany does not stick out in the mix when soloing. I don't find them particularly attractive guitars. I don't like the upper fret access of the Les Pauls although I do like the shape of the neck.
I would look at a Dean before a Gibson any day.

For lead Alder guitars are the way, for rythem nothing beats the warmth and chunk of a les paul. Personly i prefer rythem playing so i love my mahogony guitars. But i heve heard some great soloing on les pauls as well.
