• Ibanez Proline guitars ?!?

Anyone have any of these ? I hear only positive things about them. If you have one, please let me know what you think. If you wanna sell one, let me know that too. Thanks.

they're nice enough. They were the top of the line while Ibanez was shopping for a big name 80's endorser, and were dropped when they signed Vai and the Jem/RG line came out. You'd really have to play one to decide if you liked the necks, though. They are typically a little thicker front to back than a Jem neck. The upscale ones were very nice, though the pickups weren't great. Later ones had Edge trems, which are great. Lots of them had ebony bopards as well, and striaght necks without the scarf joint. My son Seamus (4 yrs old) has one as his main player It was 90 bucks on eBay with an ebony fretboard. I think if you could grab a 1770 you'd be pretty pleased with it.

I had the high end neck thru one as well as the rhoads model, they are good guitars and can be purchased somewhat cheap. The neck thru's go for about $300 to $500, look at the ibanez register site ( http://www.ibanezregister.net/ ), click on "pictures", then click on "The Guitars" and navigate down to the proline section and you will see a champaine neckthru PL2550, that use to be mine. You can also back out of "the Guitar" section and click on "the customs" and under the "metal design umcd" you will see a guitar "Grey Snake UCMD1GS" which i also use to own.

I currently still own a 540P (power) in black that looks exactly like the one satch has on the cover of dreaming #11 album, or this guitar http://www.satriani.com/2004/discogr...reaming_11.jpg

This was the first guitar i ever purchased which i did back in 1987 or 88 or 89, i cant even remember anymore. But i still own it and i am in the process of putting it back together. Great guitar with a nice alder body and small body and a really great trem on it. I had brokend the original neck and could never get a good replacment as ibanez use to charge $400 for a replacement neck. Now with Ebay i was able to purchase a nice thin wizard neck cheap and i am slowly starting to get all parts together and putting it back together.

Honestly for the money, the new RGT models seem to play better and have better pickups etc...

I had one of the bold on Rhoads copies. Really was an awesome guitar. built like a tank, unlike the ibanez's of today. Mine was shipped to me in only a gigbag with the wings sticking out of the box, and when it arrived, the wings wern't even chipped! It was the most amazing thing i'd ever seen.

Only downside is that crappy trem.

Siggy - so you can practically say they were the prestige line of the 80's right ?

The 1770 ones have a lot going for them. I picked up one on ebay out of curiosity and was so suprised I bought another one. They have a lot going for them. The one piece neck without the scarf joint is cool. The bound ebony board and jumbo frets is great. The neck profile is a bit beefier than the wizard necks which is also good. The edge trem is as good as any locking trem and it is not recessed which is another plus. Also adjacent strings do not go out of tune when bending which is great. The thing I like best about the guitar is the sound of the stock pickups played clean. The out of phase sounds are fantastic. The single coils do buzz when played alone but are reverse wired so the hum cancells out when they are on together. The preset function is actually pretty cool. These guitars are way better than the saber series which I also tried but those wizard necks are just to thin and the recessed trem is not my cup of tea. (Not to mention everything else goes out of tune when you bend). If you want one of mine I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it. I bought the second one because the finish looked like it was white in the ebay ad but turned out to be silver like the one I already have. I still want to get one of the red ones. I think this is the coolest solidbody Ibanez makes. Handles and feels more like a super tele than a strat.

I too am intrigued by these guitars...there is one just waiting for a rescue from the pawn shop near me. Just like this one, with that kooky pickup selction thing with the preset buttons.

                Re: Ibanez Proline guitars ?!?

I have a 1660 RR style body one. Unbound ebony fretboard. I've had it for just about 20 years now. I swapped out the bridge pickup right away for a Bill Lawrence. After about a year I decided I didn't like the body shape because it was awkward when sitting around and playing so I took the neck off and made a franken-strat out of the neck, the BL, and an Ibanez blazer body I'd done some wood burning designs on. That was my guitar until this year. The fretboard is very flat with jumbo frets, a fairly thin neck and an oil finish. Pretty fast neck actually. Good for noodling, not so good for chords in my case though. Has held up pretty well. Can't comment on the trem, it has been too long, the body was pearl white which has aged into more of a sparkly cream white.

They were very well made and solid playing guitars, few downsides on them would be the weird electronics and the fact that and the trem they used (ibanez pro rocker) the pole's were spread wider, so dropping a replacement floyd rose would mean having to fill holes and redrill new ones. Also you can not get replacment parts for that trem anymore, i had to buy a guitar body in order to get replacment parts on the trem, I now have a ibanez PR 1550 body with all electronics but no trem or neck. I was thinking of filling in the holes and making it a project type guitar, like putting a fixed bridge on it. the wood is alder so it is a good body, but the way i get around to project i might just end up putting the body up for sale. I still do have the trem, but i had to steal parts from it for another guitar which i sold. i plan on selling peices of what i have left of the trem as i can get pretty good money for them since you cant get parts anywhere else. I already sold one saddle for $10 and i think i still have 4 left and could probaly get more money for them.

The Pro Rock'r was only on a few of the early lower end models, and was later replaced by the original Edge trem. I don't think they put the Pro Rock'r on any 1770's, but my son's 1550 has one. (Don't buy a guitar with a Pro Rock'r trem!) And yeah, they'd be very comparable to the Prestige line made now.

1770's have an Edge.I don't know about the other models but this model is pro all the way and the electronic preset is cool, doesn't get in the way and if you don't like it you can ignore it but, one cool feature of it is that you can have all the pickups hot, dial in the sound you want and hit the preset on off switch rapidly for that cool sound just like with a Gibson toggle switch. Worth having for this feature alone.
