That's some interesting stuff. I still don't think that playing a bass below a low-A or G# (or whatever note it is on bass clef--never did learn that properly) is going to sound good in an arrangement, even with good amplification. Just too much rumble--that's too close to the bottom range of human hearing to get good note definition and such. Definitely get the venue shaking, though! Club owners have to love that... Hey, if somebody can make it work, that's great.

I think that's enough of the fat jokes, guys.

It grew old with Yngwie majorly fast and it'll be the same case here (it's ALREADY the case).

You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

We're playing nine strings on Division's next album. It's going to come with a new set of ears and some Depends for all the brown notes we'll be hitting.

Are you speaking on behalf of everyone in the band on that...

I could use a little youth serum...just as I've been regressing back to my longhaired white trash metalhead self, my wife has recently been going back to her indie rock roots--and dragging me along to those clubs with her. Listening to all of that incompetent strummery and wailing makes me feel OLD.

Maybe I'll restore the balance by making her go to some black metal show at Jaxx or something...

OK, this is the thread ender.

                Brilliant.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

No one should have to listen to indie rock. Indie makes me feel ill, not old. Besides, some of the local shows I've been to at Jaxx lately are starting to give me hope.

Oogadee Boogadee and I saw a band of 16yo kids wearing old school metal shirts, playing some kind of thrash/power/death metal, complete with harmonized leads. They sounded rough, like almost all bands with young, unexperienced guys, but it was so good to see kids striving to learn more than three chords.

Yeah, I've noticed that same phenomenon, as well. I was shocked at the Arch Enemy show I went to a couple of years ago to find the audience primarily 18 and under. I was almost the oldest guy there, and I had no idea that the young'uns actually listened to real metal anymore. Pleasant surprise.

Of course, this also means that there will be a whole crop of 16 year-olds who can play rings around me, but them's the breaks...

Come to Sonata Arctica, and you can see both, since their guitarist looks like he's about 12...

I'm sure that how the 70s vets felt in the 80s when Van Halen raised the bar. Yeah, it kinda sucks to see someone who can't even drive yet pack your lunch, but it is awesome to finally see the instrument progressing forward again. The discoveries of the 80s have now been refined and broken down to the point that they are no longer secrets. Kids are learning how to sweep and alternate pick cleanly and efficiently, since they're being taught properly from the beginning. As they get older, they're going to discover new things that we hadn't thought of. Guys like John Petrucci and Michael Romeo are amazing, heads above the guys that influenced them. Can you imagine what the kids they influence are going to sound like?

I'm wondering when/if the next Hendrix or EVH comes along--someone who doesn't just evolve the instrument, but totally makes us think differently about it. Of course, I'll probably hate his/her music, since I've turned into an old codger...

I honestly don't think you are going to find that someone can evolve the instrument above where Hendrix, Eddie and to some extent, Yngwie took it. I just can't see where someone is going to come up with a new way to coax different sounds out of the guitar, or new techniques.

But, I am a skeptic. I would love to see the next Eddie hit the scene and blow everyone out of the water.
