Dino has some good riffs but that is just a waste of wood.

That's some interesting stuff. I still don't think that playing a bass below a low-A or G# (or whatever note it is on bass clef--never did learn that properly) is going to sound good in an arrangement, even with good amplification. Just too much rumble--that's too close to the bottom range of human hearing to get good note definition and such.

Ever hang out on talkbass? There are least three 25-page arguments a week over this exact topic.

No, but it sounds like I should. As a bassist, well, I'm a really good guitarist...

Re: Does he really need another string?!?

I remember when Ibanez did the 7th Heaven videotape in late 1997. This was a promo video they made when 7 strings were really starting to hit their prime. Dino was featured on that video and he commented about how he had always tuned down his 6 string guitars, so a 7 string guitar didn't really let him go lower, but actually allowed him to play higher than normal. He then proceeded to play an arpeggio from the intro of a song off of their Obsolete album to demonstrate. The funny thing was that I don't think he touched the high E string one time!! I respect Dino as a player, but I never did understand why he needed to move to a 7 string. And an 8 string? That's just plain stupid.

Re: Does he really need another string?!?

Now that I think about it....why not? How about 9 strings? Or even 10? 11? 12? 13? 14? Heck, just make it a nice big, round number....a 100 string guitar. You could like get really low with a 100 string guitar, dude. Like Low B down dozens of octaves. You couldn't even hear the notes...just feel them. However, playing and transporting the "guitar" might be a little difficult. Pipe organs rule for low notes. How about a portable pipe organ? Through distortion? Now that would rule. On a more serious note, after examining that picture something doesn't quite look right, but I can't place my finger on it. Could that be photoshop'd? Where did the image originate from?

No, it's real. I think they're promo shots from Ibanez. There are for from the series posted on another forum, if memory serves me. I'll go dig 'em up.

Re: Does he really need another string?!?

Guitars have a place in the mix, and its not down in the same register as the bass. This is just stupid. To each their own but I HATE heavily detuned guitar sounds and I have yet to hear one that sounds good in a live mix.

                        14?

Ibanez actually did a 14-string for the guys in Korn. The concept was similar to a 12-string in that it just added the extra strings for octave doubling.

While I was looking at this thread my wife was jamming away. She looked over and penned a song for Dino! No disrespect intended as Dino was almost as much of an influence on my playing as Dime. She, on the other hand, just thought it was a picture of a dude trying to look mean with a guitar.

That is the uglyest thing I've ever seen in my life. It's a shame how guitar players think now, no solos and just noise.
