  • Another guitar project: Katrina victim II

Another guitar that was damaged in the storm. Here is some info:

    Custom guitar by
    New Orleans Guitar Company
    www.neworleansguitar.com

    7 string 31 fret
    Sunken cypress top
    Ebony fretboard
    Maple binding
    Custom flame inlay
    Mahogany body
    Neck thru

    Here are some photos:

    1. So what should I use to sand down the fretboard? Steel wool?
    2. The maple binding is delaminating a bit. What kind of glue should I use to glue it back?
    3. What does one use to sand down the frets?

I'll come up with more questions, I'm sure.

    Thanks!

I would probably use scotch bright on the wood and wool on the frets.

I'd let the thing totally dry out for a while to see if anything else happens. I'd check the fingerboard/frets for straightness, if the fingerboard got wet then it is possible the frets may have popped a bit or the board developed some weirdness like the fingerboard itself is delaminating from the neck. If the binding is delaminating, then the glue joints could be suspect, depending on the level of exposure to the water. Hard to say without seeing it.

If you just want to clean up the board and frets, take out the pickups and use OOOO steel wool or Micromesh paper. Blow off all the wool fragments when you are done with compressed air, and reinstall the pickups.

If it's wood binding, Titebond should work.

be careful not to get any scraps from the steel wool near the pickups, it can damage them.

Also, more than likely the binding was glued on with alphetic resin. I would use the same.

you can buy new bridge string ferruls from alot of parts retailers on line for like 3 bucks, so those might not be worth saving.
