So is there any reason why anyone would need the Acoustic Variax?

      Couple of reasons ..

      1) The electric doesn't "feel" like an acoustic and it feels different when your trying to record that way ..

      2) The acoustic has some different patches than the electric ..like a nylon stringed guitar ..

I've played the acoustic variax and didn't care for it. but the detuned acoustics sounded better than on the electric variaxes. I think the acoustic one definitely sounds good enough - I just didn't like the way it felt.

hey kevin, can you post some clips of the toneport thingee with an acoustic guitar?

Can you dump the nylon patch into the electric?

not that i saw. i'm betting that they're working on a model pack type thing for the variax like they did for the pod and toneport. iow, pay another $49 bucks for a few more guitar models.

What about the Workbench? Can you save patches to the Variax or do they stay in the computer?

Yes, this is true. I do it all the time. You just need to use the Variax digital cable to connect the Vax to the XTL.

It's my understanding that you can use the workbench software with the XTL without the actual workbench USB thingy.

You can store them on the computer, and also save them in any of the slots on the Vax.

Not a Model Pack per se, but check out the ION Variax patch database at http://www.instituteofnoise.com/L6/filesearch.asp Just select Variax from the "product" pull-down.

You can find quite a few user-created custom Variax patches here. This site is a great resource overall for Line 6 stuff. You really need to check out some of Jeff Miller's customer Variax guitars in the forums if you get a chance. They are works of art!

yep, the ION site is cool. Then there's always Hans from Vettaville ready to post a link to his site 12 times a day

Kind of reminds me of those teaser ads for the 11 o'clock news..."tune in at 11PM for news that can literally save your life!" I always wonder if it's so darned important, why don't you tell me now!!!

Re: My initial Variax 600 impressions

I believe the Variax acoustic may "act" differently also due to the strings.

Now if a fellow put acoustic strings on a Variax, you may get better tone from the acoustic, as well as the "acoustic" feel.

Now the clips sound good, BUT, they still have that "sound" that I dont like under strumming. They just blend in together too much and it sounds too piezoish as opposed to a mic'd acoustic which "breathes" and has better note seperation.

Still, a great emulation, but not enough where I would want to use it to record any semi serious work!

Re: My initial Variax 600 impressions

Anything can be faked with proper EQ. The tricky part is finding the right EQ settings. Given some time I'm sure I can get it sounding like a real acoustic, however, it still has to pass through processors of some sort during recording, so it's never going to sound like you're right in front of a real acoustic.
