But it's OK because...

I've never heard or seen of such a serial plate being affixed by Gibson to hide a "crooked serial number." I've seen crooked serial numbers and they weren't covered by a brass plate. What do you think guys? Stolen property? Legit? [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

interesting. i know that seller. i'd say that it's weird, but i wouldn't doubt that it's legit. i remember when he got that guitar, actually.

I emailed him to ask if he removed the plate to verify the matching number. Very wierd indeed...

doubtful. he bought a ton of guitars over the past 6 months or so and this one was one of them. i don't talk to the dude anymore, and without vouching for anything, i'd say it's probably as described.

I say bullshit! There's no such animal! I say stolen, and covered up. There's nothing in <u>ANY</u> book about brass plates, with inscribed serial numbers. If Gibson f'ed up the serial number from the factory, it would've been stamped "SECOND"....no exceptions. [img]/images/graemlins/bs.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/eviltongue.gif[/img]

My first reaction would be that it was stolen and then someone tried to cover it up. I just can't see Gibson letting something like that out the door. Then again, I am no expert. I would personally shy away from the auction to be on the safe side, but that is a beautiful axe nonetheless.

That wasn't meant as a "fire-back" at Sully's post....sorry if it was taken as that. I prolly jumped the gun with my wording in the post, but DEFINITELY didn't mean to come across so abrasive. I still think it's BS...and my post was meant more as a "red flag" of sorts. Sorry again. It's all good.

The binding inside the cutaway looks different from any Gibson I have seen. Usually the binding for the top is thick in here on a USA LP Custom.



Did this vary from year to year? Just curious.

Yes, when Gibson decided to get lazy and save time and expense, the binding got thicker/wider. Hamer does it too on some of their carved tops.
