• Suspicious!

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7377118925

"The brass serial # plate is all original as well. Made in u.s.a stamp was originally engraved a little crooked so they covered the serial # with a brass plate."

    But it's OK because...

"It's been looked at by every vintage dealer in L.a. and it's correct!"

I've never heard or seen of such a serial plate being affixed by Gibson to hide a "crooked serial number." I've seen crooked serial numbers and they weren't covered by a brass plate. What do you think guys? Stolen property? Legit?

I emailed him to ask if he removed the plate to verify the matching number. Very wierd indeed...

        Re: Suspicious!

doubtful. he bought a ton of guitars over the past 6 months or so and this one was one of them. i don't talk to the dude anymore, and without vouching for anything, i'd say it's probably as described.

I say bullshit! There's no such animal! I say stolen, and covered up. There's nothing in ANY book about brass plates, with inscribed serial numbers. If Gibson f'ed up the serial number from the factory, it would've been stamped "SECOND"....no exceptions.

I just got told by a member the other day that Sully and I are too quick to be assholes to you guys. While I can understand you have the right to your opinion do you really have to post it in such an abrasive manner? It's stuff like this that provokes some of the responses we give..

                    Re: Suspicious!

My first reaction would be that it was stolen and then someone tried to cover it up. I just can't see Gibson letting something like that out the door. Then again, I am no expert. I would personally shy away from the auction to be on the safe side, but that is a beautiful axe nonetheless.

                      Kev,

That wasn't meant as a "fire-back" at Sully's post....sorry if it was taken as that. I prolly jumped the gun with my wording in the post, but DEFINITELY didn't mean to come across so abrasive. I still think it's BS...and my post was meant more as a "red flag" of sorts. Sorry again. It's all good.

                          Re: Suspicious!

The binding inside the cutaway looks different from any Gibson I have seen. Usually the binding for the top is thick in here on a USA LP Custom.

Did this vary from year to year? Just curious.

Yes, when Gibson decided to get lazy and save time and expense, the binding got thicker/wider. Hamer does it too on some of their carved tops.

[/ QUOTE ] I would think it would be the other way around, since the Epi's and other imports I have seen have the thin binding in the cutaway.
