• Gibson Owners - Old Info, But Important

If you're going to ship a Flying V or SG, remove 100% of the tension off the neck. If that means pulling the strings off, then do so. The neck/body joint is already a weak spot, don't give UPS the satisfaction of driving the nail in the coffin.

I'll go out on a limb and say that if you have an off brand guitar built to SG or Flying V specs, make those strings flop like an old man's pecker! Remember, cause and effect. A bump or jar at one end, snap crackle and pop on the other.

If and when I sell one of my guitars, I will loosen the strings so there is no strain on the neck. Good advice for any shipped guitar.

I always loosen the strings on any guitar I ship. Dan Erlewine had specific instructions on how to ship a guitar in his book on guitar repair. I read this back in '89 or '90. I believe the "how-to" is posted on the Les Paul Forum, the last time I checked.

[/ QUOTE ] Not quite. I had a JCF01 busted by UPS and the guy who sold it to me did quite well in his settlement from UPS. It took a while, but he got mad $$$$ AND got to keep the guitar.

Well, since they completely lost the one I sent to Drake, they had no choice but to pay off the claim

However, when they found it and shipped it back to me, THEY had to deal with the headache when I asked them for an address to refund their money
Man, I'd give anything to know what kind of problems that caused for them, knowing what kinda problems they've caused for everyone whose stuff they've either lost or broken

Well if there's a guide to shipping guitars would someone please post it somewhere and make the topic sticky. There's not much worse than guitar abuse.

My 1990 Jackson Fusion Professional just got here from UPS. It's 7:06pm EST and I've been waiting for the damn thing since 2pm .

THANK GAWD it arrived without damage from Oregon. I swear, I don't think I can take the stress of worrying about my axes getting whacked in shipping. This just sucks. Why the fuck can't they just be careful! ! ! !

I never use UPS to ship, but I'm not going to force someone to use my prefered shipper. I can see it now - I tell someone not to use UPS and to use USPS and it arrives all busted up LOL!

Why not? I guess it depends on who is paying for the shipping. Hell, I'd pay extra for 'em NOT to use UPS!
