Since you got me off topic a bit, it reminds me. Pete, since you did used to own my Hamer Special FM, how would you compare it to the PRS you got? Of course, I know about the differences: 24 frets, trem, arch top, fancy inlays, etc. But in terms of playability and sound, how would you personally compare the two. And what pickups did you have in the Hamer when you had it?

That's a hard one, I haven't owned that hamer for a few years now. It had a JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck when I had it. Tone-wise - I prefer the PRS neck pickup sound, and the Hamer's bridge. I know some people hate where the neck pickup goes on a 24 fret neck, but you can actually get harmonics with the neck pickup since it's not under the 24th fret harmonic 'node'. Also keeps the neck tone from being as muddy, since it is moved a little closer to the bridge.

Fit and finish on both guitars are equal, I think. My PRS is from '91, so it's not 'factory fresh' and has a few more miles on it than that Hamer. I prefer the tuners on the PRS, and I think it stays in tune a little better due to the locking tuners. The Hamer just had a nice feel to it... I got a les paul classic not too long after I sold the hamer, and wished I had the hamer back. The LP Classic was a good guitar, but too heavy, upper fret access sucked and the tone wasn't as good. About the only really great thing about it imho was the way people would go "wow, a les paul!" when I'd take it to rehearsals or gigs. Of course, now they are going "Wow, a PRS". LOL!

Thanks, Pete. I appreciate that. As a matter of fact, I just played another Special FM identical to mine, except it was a 93 with the stock JB/59 set. The funny thing was, I actually kind of liked the JB in it and thought the 59 sounded bright and tinny. I've always felt the opposite towards those pickups. I've never played a JB I liked and the 59 sounded great in the neck of my Special. Go figure.

Heh, I yanked them out of that guitar not long after getting it. I like the '59 in just about anything, but the JB was too bright for my tastes and got traded to someone here for a Tone Zone I put in another guitar, and the '59 got sold to someone here. The EMG anniversary 81 set was much better in that guitar, brought out more low end in the bridge... and I'm not all that big on the usual brightness of the 81 in the bridge, but the JB was even brighter and totally lacked lows, IMO, and just kinda sucked!
