I've heard good things about the Ibanez RG series. Anyone own any? How many different models are there in that series, and which ones are best? Prices?
Thanks
WOW...there are a lot of RG models over the years. that's what i grew up playing, and still feel that if you can find a japanese RG with an edge trem, you can't go wrong. particularly GREAT models would be the RG550, RG560, RG570, RG770 and any of the new "prestige" versions, like the RG1550, RG1560, etc.
i personally would pay up to 700 for a used RG550 because i KNOW it is going to be killer. luckily they usually aren't that high, but the prices have seemed to be creeping up over the last year.
GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!
Ibanez RG's are great. Used, I would start with the 5xx series. The 4xx series is also very good if you want a slightly chunkier neck - but stick with a hardtail. The 5xx and up have better trems on them. The new 15xx prestiges are very good for the money also.
Checkout www.jemsite.com for all Ibanez questions big and small.
I checked the Jemsite quickly and didn't see any info on the RG series. What are the major differences between the RG550, 560,570 and 770? How long have the RGs been around?Where can I find info on determining maunf. date from serial #s?
RG550 - HSH with pickguard and maple board
RG560 - HSS
RG570 - HSH without pickguard and rosewood board
RG770 - HSH without pickguard, rosewood board with shark inlays. Usually matching headstock - higher quality than 5xx series.
Check out the other ibanez guitar forum and the prestige forum. Also, do a search on RG.
Used RG's used to be had dirt cheap - my best deal was a RG520 with a Lo Pro Edge, Dimarzio Tone Zone and PAF Pro and a hard case, all in 9.5 condition for $180 shipped. I think they go for a little more now.
The RG 565 is also a killer guitar. There is s big rumor going around that Ibanez might bring back some older RG models for Winter NAMM. I hope they do it.

if memory serves me correctly RG's developed from the roadstar series and became "RG" guitars 1n 1986-87. the first RG's looked like roadstars. the RG's we know today came in 87 after ibanez/Vai introduced the JEM.
the major difference between the RG's is as follows:

i'm looking for a 550 with that maple board
Everything over a 550 is good. I have played several 470 and below models that were also great players.
The Ibanez RG series has models ranging from beginner to pro touring musician. The Jems and Universe guitars are basically high end RG's. If you get one with an F in the serial # it was made in Japan. They are the best. Any Ibanez RG model that was made in Japan is good. There are also the USA Custom models and the USRG Dave Bunker PBC models. Ibanez has a HUGE product offering.
