If you find an 86 you can get an Edge instead of the lowpro Edge found in the 87 and up.............

The Lo-Pro became available in '91, not 87.

I just got this J-Custom RG-8670, and it doesn't get much better than this in a bolt on shredder.

          Re: Ibanez...how are they?

Many people refer to Ibanez as Ibeenhad but I think it recent years Ibanez has recovered somewhat from a bad rep in the mid to late 90's. The late 80s and early 90s saw some truly killer Ibanez guitars. Someone here has a badass spalt maple RG and a rare JC Custom RG with a flame koa top. Over a certain price and depending on where they are made some Ibanez guitars are very very good.

The Japanese-made RGs are great working man's shredders. I'd say the best deal on a used one has to be the RG520QS that was made from about '99-'02. These had a mahogany body with a quilted sapele veneer top (hence the "QS" in the name). Much better tone, IMHO, than the normal basswood-bodied RG, and you can get 'em used on eBay for $350 or so all the time.

The snazziest of the RGs were probably the early '90s RG770DX guitars, which had the LoPro trem, maple board, clear pickguard, and color matched sharkfin inlays and pickups. They came in wild colors, too. Those are selling used for more now, up in the $600-700 range last I saw.

That term goes back way before the late 90's. More like the late 80s. I can't remember which sales ad I saw that in, but I'm pretty sure it was in Guitar for the Practicing Musician.

Personally, I don't know shit about Ibanez or that they had bad years. I just like hard core metal axes and to me, that's what Jacksons represent.

Ibanez is more of a Via or Satch type of thing. Great playing, but just not what I like to play (because I suck )

                Re: Ibanez...how are they?

RG's rock I have a '91 rg560 and a 2002or3 rg570. the 2002 is lighter lower bridge, more recessed trem,-less wood noticeablty lighter, nice contoured neck pocket. The '91's lock nut was way too high. Just needed to remove the 2 shims they put on it. I read in an old guitar mag Paul Gilbert used an rg 560 and 570 to record the first Mr Big album.

That's pretty common on RGs from all eras, apparently. Their quality control isn't especially great, but they can be fixed up pretty easily.

Totally agree on the 520's, they are great guitars. As for the 7xx series guitars, I have some of those too. They play soo easily and are so cheap they're impossible to ignore (this is a 550, 750DX, and 770):

I have an RG421 in Royal Mlue Mettalic, made in Japan, hardtail, wizard 2 neck. Very well made guitar and this is the one model you rarely see for sale used, people love them that own them and they are discontinued for the cheaper Korean RG321. Jack.

I have an RG1550. It's one of the best guitars i've ever played. I will never part with it.

That was almost certainly a Korean-made RGT42. Not bad, but the quality is quite a bit lower than the Japanese Ibanezes, in my experience. You certainly won't get a Japanese-made neckthru RG (RGT3120, RGT220) for that--even the used ones sell for at least $700.
