I would have to say an early Jem. I picked up a Floral Jem in the early 90's at a music store and it was one of the nicest playing guitars I have ever picked up. At the time I thought it was the ugliest guitar I had ever seen. Looking back, I wish I had bought it.
Around 1999 or 2000, I picked up this ugly used Iceman at a Cinci GC. It was ugly, but it felt and played amazing. Everything about it was top notch. They had a jem with the plastic-covered fabric vine inlays there and this thing made the jem feel so cheap. I think mike told me it was the J model (from White Zombie). That's the guitar that keeps me from ruling out Ibanez, b/c before that, my impressions of them were based on the Vai guitars (and others), which always seem to feel cheap.
Another fantastic Ibanez 540 series is the Saber. I have never played a properly set up Saber that didn't kill.
I have a 1989 S540 that is the perfect shred machine.
I've only had one Ibanez and it was a late 80's RG760 in pink champange It was killer guitar HSS, 24 fret bound neck, sharkies. At the time that I bought it (brand new) it blew away the Jackson dinkys and was cheaper too.
Oh how are those Roadstars? Anyone played those? Seen a few nice ones on ebay with birdseye tops and binding. Sweet looking guitars but I guess they are old school.
My friend has Ibanez Roadstar RS II 440 and some other Roadstar and they are sweet guitars! They are pretty cheap too now days, it's a shame that Ibanez stopped making them a long time ago.
