Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

It wouldn't really be a Sykes signature without the mirror pickguard. The main thing they left out is the Gibson Dirty Fingers humbucker in the bridge. I know John doesn't use the Dirty Fingers now, cause it crapped out on him, but he used the Dirty Fingers hum in that guitar for a long time, when he was at the height of his career especially.

I think, I'll just go and get a new black Custom and change the hardware. What a disapointment. Maybe be something for somebody, but I've been playing for 41 years now and I still don't like the Relicing thing.

Trust me guys, this one is played to death - REALLY! The frets are all but gone, the ebony fretboard has "digs" in it. It's hard to see in the pictures, but the laquer on the upper bout is wearing away. At first I thought the back of the neck was sanded off-now that I have it in person, it's really just played off. If you look at the bridge, not only is the metal rotting away, the intonation adjustment screw heads on the E and A strings are long gone. Probably rotted away.

I've managed to free up all of the controls with tuner cleaner - the pots are real 1977 CTS brass shaft beauties, don't want to loose them. Pickups have never been removed. Currently the biggest issue is the jack - I'm sure rust in there is preventing the line from getting a good ground. It's getting better as I use it and the rust falls away.

The good thing about this axe is that it is structurally very sound. The neck is a ROCK of straightness, the truss rod looks to have never been touched. The tone is totally a GnR/Slash vibe. The neck catured the sweetness of Sweet Child, and the bridge pickup tone is bright and aggressive. It makes my other LP's sound dark and powerful, even though my R0 has Burstbuckers 1&2 than measure only 7.8K and 8.25K.

I almost set a record in ebay if you look up completed listings for black LP customs, but someone sold a 1979 with BIN for $1,100. He only takes MO's, and I haven't seen feedback exchanged yet, so that one might have been a scam (too good to be true?).

The bad about buying a beat up old axe - the frets. These are original, with the binding nibs in place. I'll be paying the piper when I take it to Dan Erlewine to have it refretted, nut work, bridge work, ...It's definitely playable as is, but just not nearly as nice as, say a thin Jackson neck with super jumbo frets.

The good thing - it didn't get beat up because it's a tone turd! This thing has SERIOUS mojo! I have another played to hell Gibson (1963 SG Special) - I wonder sometimes who played it and what type of music.

John Sykes first picked up a guitar at 14, and picked up the guitar at 21.

LOL! It's no wonder. The pickups in my 1977 are original, and they are about as far from HOT as you can get and still be called a humbucker.

I have Busrtbuckers 1&2 in a Historic LP, and those are hot compared to these. I'd say these 1977 pickups are most like SD Alnico II Pro pickups, a far cry from a Dirty Fingers.

jeesus christ, let the guitar be, this is actually the first time when some company has made something for John, he fucking deserves it and it looks badass IMHO. And edwards isn't Sykes guitar

I agree, I think it is cool and I like the Relic look. The way I see it, if you buy a beat vintage guitar...it is still wear that someone ELSE put on it, not you. If you buy one new and play it to death, cool...YOU relic'd it. However, some people like the beat look and don't have the time to beat the guitar themselves.

                    Good for John.

They have reissued the dirty fingers pickups that he used. They are reviewed in one of the recent GW's.

I always felt the Dirty Fingers pickups sounded like weak Dimarzio Super Distortions or slightly muddy slightly hotter PAF's. They are pretty cool for classic rock but I wouldn't use them for metal.

the old Dirty Fingers were cool, the new ones are crap, no way John is gonna use those in his guitars.

Yes it's the first John Sykes sig, so one would think they would have gone and made it as stunning as they could. Instead what we get is a guitar that once looked great but then got the shit beat out of it before it left the factory. Personally, if any relicing is going to be done on my guitars it's gonna be by me being a fucking moron not some dude at Gibson who's getting paid to do it.

Gibson better not invite me over, I'm so angru right now I might take a piss on their couch.
