Looks just like mine.. .a "reliced' 1980 that was well loved by the 3 owners before me, and I have added some sweat to it...

Just my opinion, but I love the relics, and own 3 fenders (always on the lookout for more too).

I do think that (other than the Tom Murphy's) the Gibson's are not done as well as the Fender's with regards to relicing. But there is an indescribable "comfort" that I get when I pick up a relic that I don't get with a factory fresh strat. And I know that i'm not gonna be spending 8-10k for the real thing!!!

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

That is pretty confusing. I think maybe they should have written:

"John Sykes first picked up a guitar at 14, and picked up THIS guitar at 21."

Who wrote the text on that site??? Am I dense or does this not make any sense?

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

I've held a Murphy once. Didn't like the fat 59 neck, but the tone was awesome. Even if you don't like the relic junk, I think they pick the best of the best to do their relic work on, so you know your getting a great axe (hopefully).

My Historic is a R0 Custom Authentic, which means the finish is dulled and the hardware is tarnished. No real relic'ing is done. I like it because it gives the guitar a "head start", but it's not overly done. I have a mint 2002 Std. and it's so beautiful, (the neck even feels better than the historic), I don't play it as much as the Historic. With the historic, I'm not afraid to play the shit out of it (it just adds more to the value, right? LOL!).

I've heard the same as Endrik regarding old Dirty Fingers vs. new. Shit, even with the old ones you'd be lucky to get $20 for them on ebay 4 years ago. They were never popular unless you are a Sykes fan.

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

I remember trying a Gibson with a Dirty Fingers back in the 80's when I was looking for a hot pickup. The salesman was trying to sell me on the guitar but I was basically demoing pickups. It had a loud tone that could pull off AC/DC, but no where enough for something like Slayer or Sepultura. I wound up with a Dimarzio X2N and I was satisfied.

well John Sykes doesn't need to sound like Slayer
he has(had) his own, the most badass guitar tone ever IMHO

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

Sykes has deserved a model for a while so thats probably why I was so offended by this relic. If they released a regular one without that goddamn relic shit I would be happy. And a guitar beat to shit in a factory and sold in a relic sounds no better so in no way justifies another 1500 of your money.

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

hmmm, if that guitar costs a lot and they put some effort in it to make it look like John's guitar then I'm pretty sure they put some effort to make it sound unbelievable too.
I'm pretty sure it sounds better than most of the Gibsons, and that's what is important for me, THE TONE. Most of the regular Gibsons are hit or miss anyway, I think you can't go wrong with that one....I truly hope so.

Re: Pic of the Gibson John Sykes

I think it great that John is getting some recognition from Gibson, but, I think the guitar is wrong. Isn't his Custom a maple top on mahogany back like the 70's customs were? This one is Mahogany/Mahogany. More Frampton that Sykes.

No matter, If I can get some cash, I'd get one. I love John's music.

Agreed. John deserves way more recognition than he gets. A great, solid rock guitar player. Considering most companies are giving anybody a signature model (my Harmony four pickup signature model will be debuting at the summer NAMM show ), it's about time that somebody worthy of a signature guitar is finally getting one!

If I had the means, I'd get one.
