I've got a MIJ I like quite well, some of the Japanese built ones are A-OK.

He Quicksilver: We will have to agree to disagree - no big deal.

I had a JEM BFP and I thought it was junk. Terrible tone. I had original PAFs and switched to Evloutions and still very bad tone. Felt very cheap and the tremelo sucked ass.

It was very thin sounding and sounded muddy when distorted and that is suppose to be one of their flagship guitars. The tone of any one of my Jacksons just killed that guitar - there was no comparison when you have them side by side and plug them into the same equipment.

I was watching a recent Paul Gilbert video with his signature Ibanez and it sounded terrible. Typical thin buzz saw tone similar to my JEM.

Why would Reb Beach switch from Ibanez to Suhr? If you read his interviews its because the Suhr guitars are far superior sounding compared to his Ibanez signatures in his opinion. I have read a lot of reviews on those old Reb Beach signature guitars and most of them allude to a thin tone and weak sustain.

Phil Collin gets fatter necks than on production PC1s because of the increased sustain and difference in tone that a larger neck facilitates.

I have been to 2 G3 concerts live and have 3 of the G3 DVD's and in my opinion Yngwies or Eric Johnsons tone is far superior when you see the 3 of them jamming together and here the guitars side by side.

Take away all the effects and listen to them unplugged, clean and then distorted. I have.

Floyd springs are typically 25% stiffer than their competitors adding to tone and sustain. Their metal is tempered harder. Thats why so many discriminating musicians use nothing but OFR. I have seen an occasional Ibanez have a Floyd Rose but not many.

Anyway these are some of the reasons why I like Jackson over Ibanez and there are strings in this forum regarding specific construction methods and materials and why Jacksons are superior to many other manufacturers.

I saw this guitar when I stopped by a couple weeks ago, and now it haunts my dreams! I've never given an Ibanez guitar a second thought before this.

I think that is a convereted RG570 painted to resemble a JEM. Great guitars but they want a bit to much for that IMO.
I imagine swirl paintjobs are not inexpensive to do well but if they were willing to drop a couple hundred, then we're getting in the ballpark.

It could also be a Herc Fede which would be VERY cool.

I've always loved the Ibanez swirls. If you like the guitar, then go for it!

I think they were advertising it was a local refin. If it was a Herc it would be worth the price for someone.

Re: The lure of the dark side is strong...

I bought a guitar from that store a month or so ago over the phone, and noticed they had this guitar and another cheaper one with a swirl paint (since sold). They also told me it was a local re-fin (and looking very good). I was tempted at the time, but the clear pickguard ruined it for me!

Interesting thing is that neck with the brown mirror sharkfins only comes on the RG2570E (I have one, its great, only paid $437 (used in new condition) at Sam Ash while they usually go for around $700 on ebay). CLICK HERE for Ibanez link!

So they matched up that neck to a 2-hum supposed mahogony body.

ahh, so that is what is what model it is! I didn't read his comment about the inlays until after the fact but I'd say you did your homework and nailed it. Yeah, the other swirl if I recall was a more greenish concoction.

There is nothing wrong with Ibanez guitars. I have two, a Prestige RG3120 and a Prestige RG1550. They both rock!

I say if you can swing it, go for it!

                          +1
I just recently obtained a RG3120TW, RGT3120TV, RGA121NTF, and a SZ2020FMTKF to add to my Ibanez collection (going on a recent Prestige binge!).

I currently have a BFP and it plays and sounds fantastic. I have had several Jems over the years and they have all sounded great, although an original DY one had a neck that never held an adjustment...everybody makes a lemon now and again.
I think its hard to beat Ibanez if you want bang for the buck.

Re: The lure of the dark side is strong...

That guitar looks like it started life as an RG2550, due the 'smoke'-colored shark inlays. I thought that 2550 had an H/S/H pickup config--but maybe it's a parts guitar.

I go back and forth on Ibanezes. I have found that the most important factor in the sound of RG guitars is the body wood. Basswood, in my experience, almost always has a dull, soggy sound regardless of the brand of guitar. The mahogany RGs I've played sounded much better. I must say, however, that I agree that even the higher-end Japanese Ibanezes seem to use a lot of cheap-ass hardware, and the company's quality control is a lot spottier than it used to be. Just one man's opinion based on experience.
