I guess i got lucky, i got my 68 for $2599 plus tax, i haggled the crap out of guitar center. In order to get that price i had to agree not to return it, so there was no 30/30 for me.

What is the "GC" tag price on those?

I defintly like the thin necks, my 1987 custom lite's neck is a bit thicker then the 68's, probaly more of a 59 neck but it is confortible and easy to play. Not to much difference between the 59's and 60's, you can tell, but not huge. However the classics have the 60's slim taper which is gibsons thinnist neck and you can tell a big difference.

Have you tried any of the Historic R7, R8, or R9 necks? They are way fatter than a "50s" Standard neck or the neck on my 1998 SG Std. Way too fat for me.

As to the classics vs standards, i love the classics so much more, and as they find out over at gibsons forum, by having ultraviolet light shine on the frets you can get the green/yellow to fade to a nice grey which makes them look alot better. You can get used classics for about 1300 to 1500 used on ebay, kinda of sad i had originaly purchased my classic for 1050 and sold it for 1150 and if i would have held onto it i could have gotten more. But they are going up in price since new ones prices have sky rocketed.

You'll be missing that one. Was it a special model or anything unusual?

$3200 is the price tag, you will also see that price at music 123 etc.. I could have gotten the same price at a forum dealer, but i hate not playing a guitar before i purchase if i am paying top dollar, not to mention GC let me put it on the card with no payments and no interest till 2008.

Yeah i had an R7 black beauty, i just could not get use to that baseball bat neck. Great sounding guitar, got it at a good price, but i just could not get use to that neck.

My classic was just a normal cherry one, nothing special about it except the way it played and sounded, i sure do miss it.

Good job on getting that price. There is a 68 SB Custom at my local Sam Ash - nice guitar, great colors.

R7 BB I'd stay far away from as well because of that fat neck. The 68 Custom Authentic BB looks a lot better. But what puzzles me is the guy on the LPF sold his 68 CA BB and kept his 1973 Norlin Sunburst.

One thing I notice with older Gibson axes (early 80's or older), they seem "laid back" compared to newer ones. The newer ones seem bright and in-your-face. Maybe they do mellow with age?

I had a 2000 Classic. It was my first Les Paul and I bought it off my friends brother for $1000 in 2001. The more I played it, the less I liked it. The neck was "sticky" and I didn't care for the PUPS. I could have easily sanded down the neck and swapped out the PUPS, but I wanted a guitar where I didn't have to do that. I tried some 2002 Standards before trading it in that played really nicely. In the end, I opted for a PRS CU24 and never looked back. For some reason though, I still want a newer Standard.

Sounds to me like you are still looking back

            I guess you're right. I don't know how I missed that.

Right now though I'm having a hard time choosing between a Les Paul and a Singlecut as my next guitar.
