I was waiting to see the Don's post

I'm with you 100%. Only one guitar would make me ditch a Jackson I though was the end all kill all guitar of my dreams... I'll get another someday, but Gibson is the real thing, like you said. Plenty of great copies out there, but they're trying to be or beat the original, period.

You hit the nail on the head, man.

        Toru -

That 60' Historic was a freakin killer guitar....I regret selling it all the time, but then again the Anderson Cobra that replaced it is without a doubt the best guitar I've ever owned. period.

The Tokai's are killer as well. Just awesome.

I find it funny how I see these threads always trying to compare the copy against the real thing.

Why is it that people must justify their copy against the real thing? Bashing and taking pot shots at the real thing? To make themselves feel better for not getting the real thing?

If you can settle for a runner-up with a glued on top - so be it.

          Don -

This isn't a "bash the other guy thread..." While I've only owned 6 Gibson Les Pauls over the years, and played countless others - my point was that in terms of quality and playability - this guitar destroys anything Gibson is making that thats not coming out of the Historic shop. On its own merits - without comparing it to anything, it's a world class guitar.

Last I checked, Gibson needed to use glue on their guitars too I accept your point about it being a veneer. A better comparison would be to the next step up from this model - the LS135 : one piece honduran mahogany back, solid albeit plain maple top, nitro finish, long neck tenon, CTS pots, Bumblebee caps, Klusons, Duncan Antiquities, MOP inlays....the finish on these is perfect. The cost on them hovers around $1000

Is it as nice as the 3 R9's I played over the weekend ? nah, those had serious vibe to them and carried $4000 + price tags. EVERY one of those has some funky finish flaw on them that was explained as a "character mark" But they sounded and played killer.

I don't need to make myself feel better about these anymore than you need to defend or justify owning a GC Historic R0 that Gibson won't even acknowledge as a "true" Custom Shop instrument. Funny though - the traits that you'll point to that make the GC R0 legit and separate it from the regular Standards are the same traits pointed out above about the LS135 - and thats just barely slipping into what goes into Tokai's mid level instruments.

Bottom line - Gibson needs to seriously get their shit together because outside of their Historics, the rest aint worth shit, and if there's any justification going on it's from the people who got suckered into spending $4000 plus for a Historic Les Paul. Buying mojo only goes so far. Dont even get me started on the $7000 - 9000 Murphy aged versions....

All ranting aside - yeah, I want an R9 too....a Darkburst

FWIW - none of this is a personal jab at you either.

None taken. I have an open mind, and I'd give the Tokai a try against my Standard, but my Standard is just phenomenal.

If you are comparing against GC or Sam Ash Gibson Standards, I don't doubt your Tokai blows them away. So does my Standard. I ususally walk out of there shaking my head in disbelief. There is a very good reason these axes are sitting there week after week.

I guess I just got lucky with mine.

I'm on the road to ruin now....scored a sweet 94' Standard a couple of days ago, and got a call from a friend today about an R9 that I can score now that I've been drooling over....sold the Tokai today
