  • OLP MM1 versus Jap Peavey Wolfgang

i was wanting to get some opinions on this comparison. I know there is alot of didderence between the two. But is the difference worth all the extra money(125.00 vs 600.00). Also anybody have the OLP?

I believe the import Wolfgang is Korean, not Japanese. Having not played either, my understanding is the Wolf is the better of the two.

Find a used one for less than half that, and I think you'll be happy. I've heard a few guys on here talk up the import Wolfies quite a bit. Never heard anything about the OLP's.

The OLP you mention for $125 has to be the base model that's been around for several years and does NOT have the floyd rose. The newer models with the floyd go for around $289 new discounted on ebay. You could probably find one used for $200 - $225 with floyd.

I have checked out the non-floyd OLPs in the stores and they were a $200 guitar selling for $200. I ended up getting a mod'd one with added floyd+nut and in the yellow/black VH paint scheme for $300. I got it for the look, and it plays decent. The pickups aren't the greatest in these, I had to swap them out.

I have two USA Wolfies and have checked out the import ones. You can get the imports from $450 up and I've seen solid color USA Specials for $500. A quick check of ebay completed auctions show quite a few selling in the $500 range. You need to do some research on the internet so you can learn the differences between the Import models and the USA specials.

I'd do your homework and look for a used solid color USA Special for around $500. You'll be getting an $800 guitar for $500 vs. a $250 guitar for $200 with the OLP. You'll be much much happier in the long run, you'll have a quality instrument, something you can be proud of, and something that won't embarrass you with your friends (like the OLP would)!

mountaindog, thanks. I never looked at it that way. I guess a 200 dollar guitar will always be a 200 dollar guitar

I disagree.. I had several MM1, MM4 and MM612's and I think they were quite good actually for the money they go for.. the MM612 went to a member on the JCF btw, so he can chime in also.

Re: OLP MM1 versus Jap Peavey Wolfgang

Regarding telling korean Wolfs from american Specials, I believe it´s as simple as korean = quilt veneer, american = solid color. Or am I missing something?

Re: OLP MM1 versus Jap Peavey Wolfgang

Do they make a Korean equivalent to both USA Wolfgang types (Standard and Special)? IIRC the USA Special was the flattop, or was it the stop tail? In any event I would go with the USA Model, standard or special.

Careful what you say about those OLP MM1's...you never know who might have had a hand in their development!

The Korean Special had a quilt veneer. The USA Special had a flat top with or without a flame maple top, plain maple neck, single volume and a Floyd. The USA Standard had the arch top and a choice of either Floyd or stop tail, volume/tone, and a birdseye neck.

The MM1's are nice, but its still a relatively low end guitar. Between a MM1 and a Squier strat (another guitar in that price range) IMO, it'll blow it out of the water.

But a Peavey is a BIG step up from that, AND they have resale value.
