  • RS Guitarworks

Just read a review of one of there models in the latest VGuitar. Anyone tried them? This particular model (Rock Master) has a neck profile they call the "San Dimas Soft U" (??!!??). Great review, and it's a good looking guitar too.

I've played one of their Stepsides. It was outstanding.

Isn't this the outfit that tried to pass off a Tokai neck and unknown body done up as a white Jake E. Lee claiming it was a '74 Strat?

Yea, That's them alright. I think it was Chuckracer that bought it and found out it was not genuine and returned it.

That was an unfortunate incident and Chuck got his money back. The RS rock master proto that VG did the artical on is an oustanding guitar I've played it and to me the neck feels a lot like an EBMM.A very comfy profile not thin but not huge either. The neck has a long tenon for a bolt on.Reverse tele style headstock looks slick as well.
              WCR/RS shredder pickups, Schaller floyd,Schaller tuners,CTS/RS pots, Hovland/RS Caps.Top quality in every respect.# 2 the yellow one(on their website)is a killer guitar as well.
These guys build some awesome guitars. VG and ToneQuest report both give them very high marks.

I can't see Roy trying to defraud anyone. I don't know the story on Chuckracer's guitar, but would think there had to be some kind of misunderstanding.

"but would think there had to be some kind of misunderstanding."

It is pretty cut and dry. Seller:here is a guitar made from a '74 Strat. What the buyer gets is a guitar made from a Tokai neck and unknown body. Seller refuses to refund the money and pretty much says tough shit, it is a Fender. Seller is proven wrong and still refuses to make good on the deal. LOOOOONG thread on the JCF appears that lasts about a week with no response from the seller as to an explenation. After all of that the seller finally decides to do what is right, but only after the week long thread. The thing that blows me away is that the seller works on and modifies Fenders. He claims to have been doing it for years. Well, anyone that has taken apart and seen that many Fenders would have known IN AN INSTANT that the Jake was not made from Fender parts. I think the seller knew all along that it wasn't a Fender and was trying to get away with it thinking the Jackson/Charvel crowd wouldn't be so Fender savey...

                    Re: RS Guitarworks

I know Roy personaly and he is VERY knowlegable when it comes to vintage Fender and Gibson guitars. We discussed that body before he put it together. From what we could tell it was a Fender 3 bolt neck plate body.He was not sure if the neck was but he was going to build a REPLICA of Jake's guitar with it because it was the correct headstock and fingerboard needed for the project.Plain and simple it was a parts guitar as was Jake's.
Roy could not reply on the forum because he was blocked by the admins. The seller DID make good which is a lot more than some of the people around here.
And no Roy would not knowingly try to shaft anybody he is not that kind of person.
He does work for some VERY big name artists and is honest as the day is long.OK my rant is over.

                        Re: RS Guitarworks

Hey, I am just relaying the experience. IMO the guy ISN'T "VERY knowlegable" if he even thought for a second that was a Fender body. I know, I had the guitar in my possion. It being a parts guitar has nothing to do with it. The guitar was represented as a '74 Strat. A parts guitar '74 Strat would have been fine. It was neither a Strat or a '74. Another thing, the refin was hardley what I would call a "pro" job...

Hmmm, he wasn't sure what the neck was, but decided to represent it as a '74 Strat neck? Sounds like you are confirming that the guitar was misrepresented on purpose.

                            Re: RS Guitarworks

No it wasn't.When the guitar came back we looked at the neck and agreed you were probably right it COULD have been a Tokai neck.Fender bodies of that time period had some variations in the contours from body to body and the pickup routings on that body had been altered so Roy made a bathtub route so the Jake pickup config would fit.
I don't know how many people you make guitars for so maybe you are an expert.I don't see your name in VG or ToneQuest report so maybe I'm wrong.
I'm done with this whole thing.

I doesn't matter what the neck could have been, what matters is that it isn't a Fender neck. The countours of the body are not what determined that is wasn't a fender. It is the micro tilt route in the neck pocket that was the dead givaway.
