Re: Uli Sky Guitar

Auserwald also made 36-fret guitars at some point. If you can live with 30 there are 30-fret Ibanez Artfields running around out there. Be careful about throwing down a lot of $$$ on a Hamer Virtuoso if you find one as IIRC the scale length on those is 26 1/4" which might not be to your taste.

I have an EC-36 and really like it. They're great guitars though I'd sort of second the criticism of the trem. It's not great but it's not completely awful either. The worst part is probably the unavailability of parts should you ever need them. The creator of Washburn's EC series has said that there are probably between 1000 and 2000 EC-29 and EC-36 guitars out there so they'll certainly turn up.

Thanks Brad, I like the EC36. I will keep my eyes open for one if it presents itself. I often get bored of just meedley meedley meedley. I have been playing nothing but Texas Blues all winter and now I am looking for a change.
The Chapman stick interests me but they are entirely too expensive. I have been watching Uli's Beyond the Astral Skies live concert so much I have GAS for a mondo-fretted guitar.

I have 2 of the EC36, and 2 of the EC29. Another one readily available is the old Danelectro Longhorn(?). I think they had 31 or 33 frets. I believe they also made 12 stringers as well, but Im not 100% sure. To play the high frets you need to change youre playing style abit...........

Will Hamer make a virtuoso as a custom order?

I've heard that they won't else I'd have tried to order one by now. Having Jackson clone an EC-36 has been very tempting for a while now but I'm afraid to ask for a quote.

Definitely not. They have moved very far away from the shredder past of the 80's and 90's. Hamer pretty much wants nothing more to do with guitars of that build.

I used to have an EC29 and it actually has a somewhat useable upper fret register. I can't imaging the 36's being very playable though

Re: Uli Sky Guitar

I thought it would be cool to surface the fingerboard with metal above the 27th fret or so for some fretless playing surface. That way you could feel out the right notes without worrying about your finger fitting between little frets. Based on the experience I had with my Rand guitar, I was still able to fret notes without too much trouble up to the 26th fret approx.

No, not really. I could get usable stuff up to about the 32th fret once I worked at it some, but I could never shred up there, since I could really only finger those notes cleanly with my pinky. Frets 33-36 were purely ornamental for me.

What was most disappointing were the audio results. If you go to my site:

my music site

you can check out my tune "Lament of the Old Gods" and hear the EC36. I used it to record some 'Brian May on Steroids" three-part guitar harmonies, but ultimately the top part (played up around the 30th fret) came out sounding pretty much like what you'd get from a Harmonizer. I don't think guitar electronics are well-suited to process such high-pitched notes.

Thanks! I'm working on some new ideas that are a little more radical than the stuff currently on my site, but I'm reasonably happy with what's up there now. I do need to redo my mp3 conversions at a higher bit rate, though. Those two newer pieces on the homepage aren't exactly professional caliber recordings, but they can sound a lot better than that.
