Re: EVH\'s guitars

Eddie could play a plank of wood with Fender Nickel 9's strapped to it and still smoke all of our asses.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

i called vai to tell him the guitar was ready. he offered to pay for materials or whatever, and i said i would be happy to give it to him if we were going to work together. i was this little unknown talking to a star, iwas in awe. he said he was not interested in the big companies that were courting him and he sounded sincere. he got the guitar and really liked it, and within days he signed a deal with ibanez. i was bummed, but they gave him more money than i'll ever see, so how can you blame him. i heard from a friend that worked with him that he used the guitar quite a bit in the studio, and even had corruthers who did a llot of the ibanez artist guitars, copy the neck. i never heard from him again.
years later i saw him back stage at the stones steel wheels tour, and like a stupid kid a went up to him and said hello and reminded him that i had made a guitar for him. he looked at me like i was from mars and kept walking. boy did i feel stupid.

Van Halen played in my hometown in 79.This was the first time I got to meet Ed and the boys. The first thing that really stood out to my star struck ass was the size of Eddie's hands when we shook hands. His hands were huge, very muscular.I could see why his setup would be differnt.....

Re: EVH\'s guitars

Action on Frankenstein (currently) is very high and the trem arm moves about an inch before it even begins to move the bridge. However, EVH can play the sh*t out of it. His Wolfgangs and Music Man guitars are set up with fairly low action and he can play the sh*t out of those too. His hands are huge (I'm 6'5", and thay are basically as big as mine) and he is STRONG. Watching him play, everything looks so effortless, yet having the opportunity to be able to hang and watch him jam up close, he manhandles the instrument like no one else. To me, I am amazed that he picks so hard, grips the strings so hard, yet somehow makes it look like he is not putting forth any effort. Simply amazing....

The guy is just an incredibly gifted artist....no two ways about it.

I've been lucky enough to become friends with him and not only is he a great player, he's a great guy. Like anyone, he has his issues, but as a person, he has the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met.

Thanks so much for posting this. I really appreciate any insight into EVH, and I also appreciate the positive tone of your post, which is based on real life experience with the man himself. I see a great deal of negative comments floating around with no factual basis, and this is the antidote. Thank you.

You lucky bastage! You get to actually see first-hand how Ed's guitars are setup and compare them to "stock" models

Any chance of the EVHs being shipped set up Ed's Way?

But yeah, Ed's human like everyone else. Gold and Lead are one molecule different. Flip one molecule's switch and Lead becomes Gold. I'd imagine that Genius and Insanity are just as close.

thanks a lot for that, MrktGuy!

i had always hoped that he wasn't the negativity that a lot of medias sources made him out to be:

you helped me realize he isn't.

+1!! (without all the bashing) I don't even here things like that said (in the other thread) about George W and he's the president. Ed's just a fuckin guitar player for Christ sakes..........

That's very cool to hear. Does he still play around with all those guitars like the 5150 and Frankenstein? I saw the pics a few weeks ago with a Wolfgang lookalike with p90s(!)

I've shimmed Floyd saddles--works great, especially on 7-string guitars, where a difference between the saddle and neck radiuses is especially noticeable.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you mean putting a shim in just the middle saddles? If so what materials did you use for the shim? and did you just put it in under the middle strings in the nut.
