  • Dimarzio project...

    Hey all,
I recently acquired a Dimarzio Explorer body and Mighty Mite (supposedly) neck. They came from Ebay, both from late 70's/early 80's. The neck was totally virgin, minus the tuner holes. It had an unslotted nut, only 2 mounting holes that were drilled about 1/2" deep (probably from where the original owner wanted to see what it would look like mounted to the body), no screw holes for the t-rod cover, and no holes for the tuner screws on back. There was alot of speculation as to wether or not it was a model series neck with the laminate removed, it is not. Not sure if it is in fact a Might Mite, but definintely not a J/C neck. The body had only the trem holes drilled and the cavity cover was still taped to the back.
Both pieces were finished years ago, and because of the feel and look of the aging, I don't have the heart to refinish it, at least not yet. It even has that vintage smell. It has some drips and runs, but they don't look that bad. The headstock has a little birdseye here and there.
Here it was when I got it:

    Here it is thus far:

I'm still trying to decide where to put the volume knob. I like the standard Charvel placement, but most of the real Charvel Explorers seem to have it placed a little further back. The toggle will be on the horn either way. I know I lack 2 screws on the trem, they were the 2 dreaded "plug n' redrill" holes, and have since been attended to. I'll post updated pics soon.

The pickups are Tonezone bridge and Air Norton neck. They sounded killer in the guitar I stole them from, but I have yet to hear them in this one.

Sorry about the size, I edited them on my computer AND photobucket and they still came out huge. Admins, please feel free to resize them!

Nice body. Maybe this can help you in deciding knob placement:

          Wow!
Yep, that's where I've seen most of the volume's placed. The toggles and tone knobs seem to vary. I guess I should've asked all the Explorer owners to post some pics for me. I've only seen what's in the gallery and have NEVER seen one in person.

Wow, it looks great. I love the look of an Explorer. Hell, I love Explorers, period. I have 2 Gibson Explorers.

I really dig that guitar. Nice work, and good luck with it.
