And why would this be so much more valuable than, say, an '83 V?

    Production numbers only?

Good question. 1981 was the last year of production for the "Style 2" build of Flying Vs (which included the Medallion Series). 1975 thru 1981 body style, which has the rounded, more blunt headstock, is the most sought after design in the V series. For most classic rockers, the minute they saw the EBAY ad above, they thought of Michael Schenker. That alone will push the price sky high.

In 1982, Gibson went radical with the V2 and it's boomerrang pickups were shit compared to Style 2 Vs. By 1983, Gibson had lost consumers and they were trying to latch onto the new wave of "hair" bands. The quality of the guitars suffered, but that does not mean there are not some jewels out there. It was also the time that Gibson introduced their Dirty Finger pickups. If you can find authentic DFs, you've got some of the raunchiest, grittiest pickups ever made.

As you probably figured, I have a '83 Gibby V, black no pickguard, pretty sure the pups are 498T & 500T...this vintage seems to go for 400-600 on the bay.

Because they are more badass than the 83 knock offs.

My 1981 for comparison. Note, it has binding. I am not sure how rare the binding is on these old V's.

I think they look better without pickgaurds, but as long as they play and sound good-well Jack.
