Wanna make a bet? I've owned plenty of guitars with EMGs. Body wood IS still a factor.

Why? You're just gonna need a pedal to boost the gain to even get into Metallica territory. Those Jubilee silver 25th anniversary models are what Slash used, and what his signature model is. If you like classic rock and G'nR hard rock tones, that amp will do fine.

            1. No shit, buy a jackson. Soloist, RR or KV will do you fine for old metallica - that what I use(d). Go fo a early 90s japanese "professional" model if you want to try to save a buck. My main guitar was an '01 black soloist ala Jaff Hannenmen (just with a floyd and Duncan pups instead of the EMG and the kalher).

            2. For the "old" Ride/Master/Justice sound - Mesa triaxis plus a good stereo graphic eq (make the "v" with the tone controls to scoop the mids) and make sure the eq has the "range" option to control the amount of octave tone control you get - more on this later, also a decent effect rack into a Mesa 2:90 and a marshall 1960 lead cab (with the 4 75wt cellestians). For the master sound - use the mark III channel or Mk IIC channel on the triaxis with the gain dialed up and set the rest to taste - set the eq "range" to "1/3 octave" meaning that the most that you are going to swing any of the tone 1/3 of an octave - . The Kill 'em sound was pure marshall but you can still get it using a less "gain" on the Mk II or III channel and do not use the eq - I dont even bother. For the Justice sound - use the Mk IV channel on the triais and set the eq range to 2/3 octave - this will give you the extra crunch of the justice album.

You will have to dial everything to taste -but that is a general overview on one way to do it.

I was in a Mectallica cover band for a few years and never had any complaints about the sound.

            Good luck.
