  • Bought a Carvin today...

...the only one that I really really dig, other than the california carved tops...

It's a Carvin Allan Holdsworth Fatboy. HF2 I think is the right model. Hollow body, set neck, kinda like a 335 from the future or something. Light as heck, plays really well, and gets nice tones. Will probably feedback like hell live though, we'll see. I like it, but if I can't play it live...

So far it's pretty neat though!

Pete - I have one - it will feedback at high gain settings just like any hollowbody such as my Gretsch. Even though it sounds great at high gain settings I think it'd be a bitch to control it live. But, it's been done before - Nugent did it for years.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

ARGH. Little Nugent story - he stuffed the guts of those with some sprayfoam product and ruined all of his 'stage' hollowbody guitars. This sucks, I dig the guitar, but if I can't play it live then the usefulness drops way down on the chart. CRAP.

Doesn't your JSX have a built-in noise gate? I wonder if you can adjust that to help.... It IS a beautiful guitar, be a shame to not be able to use it live.

On the other hand, worst-case scenario is, use it for some of the lower-gain stuff, guitar changes are always cool.

Pete - if your sole purpose for the guitar is to have it be interchangeable with any 2-hum solid body then this guitar isn't a keeper for you. It's too bad you didn't get the coil tapping option on this guitar. This is the first guitar I've owned that had coil tapped pickups that I thought sounded good. These are by far the best Carvin pickups I've ever used as well - I normally don't care for them at all.

              Here's a picture of mine:

Yeah, I ran across this at the GC supersale this weekend. They had it for about a year (way overpriced) and I figured it would be knocked down for Memorial day.

It's a shame too, I dig the quilt, the body is actually growing on me a little (I thought they were fugly the first time I saw one) and it really plays well, and has a great tone. Heck, it even is fairly loud acoustically... sounds better than the Hamer USA Duotone I had. *note to self, wonder how piezo saddles would sound in this* hmmmm....

It's basically a Tele body, that bothers you so much?

I never did like the Holdsworth headstocks, but I dig the body shape. Excellent quilt on that one. I came very close to buying a Carvin, but I think I'm hooked on strats now. I would have gotten their Bolt + C, though.

How do you like the neck? Isn't that the one with the 20" radius? I have been interested in those for a while since I spend most of my practice time on a classical guitar and many folks have compared the holdsworth neck to that of a classical guitar.

I've always wondered about the two strap buttons on the bottom...

                              How's that work?
