New / Old 02' Les Paul Standard.....

It took me owning 4 others and playing a few hundred more - but I scored the Magic Les Paul....this thing is just awesome. Acoustically this guitar rings like a bell...The stock 490 / 498 pups left a major bit to be desired so I yanked them out and sent them to Wolfetone for his "Marshallhead" rewind....in the meantime I lucked into a set of WCR Goodwood pups and an RS wiring upgrade kit. All I can say is ohmyfreakinggawd - this thing sounds absolutley insane now. I really can't say enough about what an amzing superior upgrade these pups were - I'm a believer. I doubt the Wolfe's will go in here now.

Really an amazing guitar. It literally sat unplayed in it's case for the last four years...it's comes to life more each time I pick it up...very Page'ish in color in person.

When I pulled the pups out it was marked LB in the pickup cavity, which I understand means Lightburst. Honeyburst is even lighter than this - but yeah, Lightburst and Honeyburst are my favorites as well.

It's funny how many of these you can play and think "ah, it's allright..." then one comes along and you play one chord and it just lights up the room. thats this one

I know your pain of finding the right les paul, i went through many till i finally have the two that i love.

My first is a 1987 custom lite, i use this guitar for more rythem playing or anything where i need a super warm tone. The guitar does not have the maple cap and is one solid slab of mahogany, so it is warm as hell. And yes this guitar still sounds great unplugged, great sustain and rings out.

My second is a 2005 1968 Reissue Tri burst custom, thing has great sustain, great play and is a fine peice of craftmanship. I use this guitar alot.

I am in the market for a 80LP with maple neck, so that is my next goal to find one that sounds great. i am going to check one out this week sometime.

And I'm pretty sure Lightburst is the the "lightest" finish. Honeyburst is a little darker. Think maybe halfway between Lightburst and Tobacco Sunburst. But then again, guitar-to-guitar, Gibson seems very inconsistent with their transparent finishes. I've seen some Cherry Sunburst guitars that have looked like Light/Honeybursts, and vice versa.

If you do a search on the LP forum or the Gear Page you'll find endless discussion about the WCR's. The Goodwoods are like a hotter PAF style wind but with a clarity thats got to be heard to be believed....not cheap new, I got these used ( but in perfect shape..).

Stock pickups for 2002 are the Burstbucker Pros. The 490R/498T combo was 2001 or earlier.

Here is my 2002 in lightburst. I "speculate" that because Gibson did such a huge amount of spec changes in 2002, that quality control was stepped up a notch for this year. Of my 4 LP's, this one is #1 in quality/workmanship.

Killer guitar! just beautiful - very similiar in color and burst to mine. I don't know how to determine the difference between 490 / 498 vs. BB's - I will say that these had no markings or stickers on them at all other "Gibson" if I remeber, and the BB's I've used and seen all have some sort of sticker on them...either way they got sent to Wolfe

How do you like this compared to your GC R0 ?
