  • The resurrection of a Frankenstrat...a photo montage....

A few months ago I scored a relic style Frankenstrat body on E-bay. It needed some "minor" trem post repairs, according to the ad. I also scored a "medalion" Fender strat neck, setup for a Floyd, and unfinished.

I decided to go with a "transition" Frankie look, with a PG and either a V-Trem or a non-tuner Floyd. I decided on the non-tuner Floyd. I was aiming for kind of an interpretation of this guitar from during the Fair Warning era. I went with my Fair Warning style Hybrid Duncan in this as well.

Well, when I got the body in, I realized that the post holes were completely blown out. It was going to take some major surgery. Also, the neck pocket was butchered.

So, I sent all of this stuff up to Dino from Dino's guitars...who I know from Guitars101 and the EVH boards.....

Dino was awesome. He sent me updates with pictures whenever he did work, and his work is great, as you will see. Dino also had a non-tuner Floyd that he gave me a great deal on...which saved me the hassle of E-Bay for that vital part.

So, without further adieu...here is the rebirth of Frankie.

Here we have the initial carnage, and Dino's first repairs:

Next up, a look at the Floyd, prior to mounting:

Filling the repair, prior to repaint:

    The nasty neck pocket action:

Damage repaired, fortified and concealed...you never would know it was there:

The completed product!!! Damn, this came out better than I had imagined!!!

My hat is off to Dino. Fast work, excellent communication, easy to work with and almost daily work updates WITH PICS!!! Could you ask for more? Oh, yeah, he was very inexpensive as well.

Let me know what you think...I will have it back next week after final tweaks and setup.

    Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Fucking sweet! He did an amazing job, especially on the trem post repair. Why they hell was the neck pocket routed so strangely when you got it? I can't figure out why someone would do that...?

Great looking guitar, can't wait to hear how it plays.

Yeah, I have seen lots of Fenders routed that way. What I don't understand is why it had to be changed.

Also, does that old Floyd stay in tune?

Dino does do great work, but you need the quarter under the floyd mike, and some bike reflectors too and it would be bad to the bone.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

+1. They do this on the Mexi Strat bodies.

                        Nice work!

Yeah, the quarter may be in the future!!!

So, Mexi-Strats are routed like this? I don't know WHAT the body is...but it is VERY light, I assumed Basswood. Do they make Basswood Mexi-Strats?? Maybe it is Swamp Ash, but it is very soft.

Pretty much any non RI Strat body since mid to late '76 has a neck pocket rout like this, except, IIRC, the MIJ stuff (which isn't made by Fender).

I wouldn't be all that surprised if that body was from a '79 25th Anniversary Strat, a '80-'82 The Strat, or a '82 Smith Strat
