I've seen 3/3 and 4/2 alignments and the explanation was pretty much the same, so I came to conclusion that it is mostly hype.

Its not hype. The total length of the string from peg to ball will affect the feel of the string - namely, a longer string is easier to fret and bend because the entire length of the string is being stretched.

I have no problems with fretting and bending whatsoever, and in general prefer longer scale, thicker gauge and higher action. So for me making the guitar a notch "easier" is not the issue.
