Derek Roddy is a savage drummer. Also the guy in Necrophagist is class.I don't know who he is though. Also check out Mike Mangini. Fastest hands officially!
I like Nile but when I saw them at Graspop I got bored very quickly. The sound didn't help but it was not nearly as good as the cd's. I have to agree there.

Not only does he own a KXK, he's an endorser. He's got a 7-string V that is an absolutely killer guitar.

          HoWheels,

If you want examples of fastest drumming, then check out those worldfastestdrummer contests and stuff. I'm not really interested in those things.

But if you want examples of better drumming then I can help.

It is hard to explain why one player is better and more skilled. You have to know all the shit about drumming.
A good drumming consists of a lot of things: meter/tempo, groove, tone, feel, dynamics, supporting other players, playing for the song, knowing tons of different licks, rolls and fills, ability to play every music style, knowing a lot of different rhythm textures, mastering all the rudiments, knowing polyrhythms, ability to play in different time signatures, thinking out side of the box, drum solo composition and orchestration etc. etc. etc.

Some speed blast guy may impress you with pure speed. But most of those guys play the most simplest patterns. Only a single stroke roll on snare and on the toms or with 2 time repeat and constant 16th note kick pattern under it.
          K--xxxxxxxxxxxxx-
          T1-xx------------
          T2---xx--xx------
          T3---------xx----
          S------xx-----xx-

          It is very simple.

You have to pay attention what the drummer does with each of his hand and leg. How he combines different rudiments with them. How he plays different rhythms together etc.
When some dude does something like this on the snare

          L-L-R-L-R-L-L-R-R-L-R-L-R-R-L-L-R

and combines it with different kick patterns and hat or ride rudiments.

It looks and sounds slower but it is WAY harder to do that than some lame ass blasts.

Anyway the fastest guy in the wrold is Mike Mangini. He is the biggest freak of nature. Not only he is the fastest and has the best endurance, he also can come up with the most insane polyrhythms and can combain 4 totally different rhythms together no matter in what time signature they are.
You ask him to play 4/4 7/16 3/8 15/32 at the same time, he will do it.
Also he can groove like motherfucker, he can play anything from jazz and latin to heavy rock. He has feel, he has tone and he is hilarious. A true showman.

But all those guys with monster speed like Mangini, Rabb, Donati, Mayer etc. don't show off their speed, because it's boring and unmusical. You can see them speeding only when they are practicing.

Guys like Kolias are one trick ponys. They can't do anything else. Guys like Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl can play anything and they are very musical.
Kolias is like Francesco Fareri or Great Kat of drumming while Dave Weckl is like Steve Vai or Uli Jon Roth of drumming.

While I hate all extreme metal drumming because it sounds like a drum machine clicking I give props to Derek Roddy. I don't like most of the stuff he plays, but he sure can play. After seeing him playing 2 over 3 rhythms, doing jazz and nailing Procarios Rosanna rhythm I knew he is good. Definetly the best player in extreme metal.

In metal the most creative guys are Bobby Jarzombek, Danny Carey and Thomas Haake. They are one of the few guys I like in metal.

There is always a big debate wich drummers are the best. Metal guys say that some extreme metal guy is the best, modern metal fans say that Jordison is the best, punk fans say that Travis Barker is the best.
I'm a rock fan, I like guys like Tommy Lee, John Bonham, Joey Kramer etc. but I assure you, the jazz/fusion guys are the most skilled drummers. Every pro will say that to you too. Jazz/fusion is the most demanding, it combines all the different music styles and rhythms together.

And you have to pay attention what the drummer does with the band and whitout the bands.
All the kids are saying how great Mike Portnoy is, I agree he is a great drummer, he can play some sick shit with the band, but when he does a solo without the band he is so lame it's embarassing. Drum solo composition is a very hard thing and jazz guys are the best at it.

Ok, let's cut the crap, here are some examples.

Mike Mangini, not his best solo, but you can see his insane one hand rolls here, and he is joking while he is doing it.

          LINK

The kings of the hill today are Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl. Every pro will say that they are absolutely the top of the game. No wonder they are doing bazillions of sessions every year. They do EVERYTHING great, I've even heard that people complain they are too perfect.

Marco Minneman, insane cordination, he combines totally different rhythms into one

Jo Jo Mayer, very creative player with monster chops

Carter Beauford, the most musical drummer ever, you will never get bored of this guy

          LINK

Dennis Chambers, probably the most demanded guy in jazz community right now, he is also one of the greatest groove masters

There are tons of more GREAT players like Terry Bozzio, Neal Peart, Steve Gadd, Peter Ernskine, Steve Smith, Stewart Copeland, Billy Cobham etc. etc. etc. you just have to check them out.

Endrik that was one of the most complete best drummmer ever posts I've read. I play drums but I'm not great. The drummer in my band however is insane. He always talks about and has me watching youtube videos of most of those guys you just gave links to. I'd pretty much agree with what you totally.

I agree that all of the drummers that you haved posted are great, and i have alot of good friends who drum and i have been exposed to many great players. But what bothers me is the same as when people compare guitar shredders to jazz players or whatnot. If blasts and death metal arent your bag, then why slag a guy for his drumming....especially not in a thread that has nothing to do with him. If you want to talk shit about guys who play blast beats then do it in a thread established for it, and ill stay clear. I think people all need to stop with the shit talking, and just handle their business. Now if youve seen nile live and were not happy with the quality, then fine youre justified to be upset. But dont slag everything about the drummer/rest of the band infront of people who still like them. Im by no means looking to start an argument online, cause they lead nowhere. All im saying is it bothers me so much when 3/4 of the threads i read are....this guy is better, this guy sucks...Cant we all just eat tasty marshmallow treats together??

don't be a forum police, this guys SUCKS because he can't even play his own things (blasts, he can't do nothing else) right.
I don't like blasts but I did gave props to Derek because he can play, didn't I.

                        It is a different langauge..

I don't think you could throw Nick Barker in Weather Report..and Dave Weckl in Nile, Cryptospy, or Morbid Angel..

                        I dunno, they're good players..maybe.

A lot of metal drummers cross over into other styles..Dave Lombardo is on my kid's PS2 game w/ a DJ..

actually Dave wouldn't have ANY problems playing in Morbid Angel.

Colaiuta played with Megadeth, Mangini played with Annihilator, Lang did many sessions for metal bands.

If you are rated so high, then you have to be capable of playing anything.

No E, I don't, I'm sure it's amazing..I fell out of that whole fusion thing when I sold all my bass gear..

that's what I listen to when I play bass..

I listen to stuff that is along the lines of my own writing/playing I guess..
