I just got it. It is a solid body and weighs 7 pounds. Big 500K pots. It is a pretty damn nice guitar where ever it was made.

Well, this $104 guitar plays like a dream. I think it is an Indo one made in the '90's. Those "crappy" tuners are rock solid 14:1's. The pups are just sweet. Solid body and a very nice neck. So, what you are saying is because I only payed $100 for a guitar I didn't get a good one? Oh. But I beg to differ.

I have one of the original Squiers from back in 1984 when Squiers were only Telecasters because it was the Billy Squier model. that's the only Squier you could get then. probably no one remembers that now. it was all black with a black pickguard and a one piece maple neck/fretboard. it is Japanese made and used cheap crappy parts and had vintage frets that soon I realized were much too small for me. so I played it for three years, then took it apart, got a Charvel and never put it back together again until two summers ago when I customized it with a garage paint job, all new parts, locking Grover tuners, a Warmoth neck and SD pickups. it kills now.

somewhere along the way Squier line expanded radically and really got out of hand. now it's just the chinese cheapie line. kind of a shame really.

anyway here's my customized 1984 Squier Tele.

Are you saying the Squire line of Fenders was named for Billy Squire? http://www.nikhef.nl/~templon/StratFAQ.txt

Squires were always considered a substandard line of Fender..like Epi with Gibson...not because of Billy. They existed in the Katana line which say "made in Japan" but it's still questionable that they are all Japanese production much like MIJ Charvels with Fort Worth plates. Maybe one of the Japan members can comment on that.
I'm thinking the Katana Squire doesn't have a ply body. That being said.. there are some decent Squire series Strat's and Tele's I've played from Korea and Indo, but usually the hardware is the of the cheaper variety.

I'm pretty sure Squire Bullet series were very early 80's..at least '82 or '83 as were the early Squire Stratocaster copies,...pre dating '84...altho, a '84 is still early.

My Chinese Squire is a solid body guitar with a trans sunburst finish.
The all maple neck is very comfortable, straight as an arrow and the fret finish was pretty damn good.
I did need to file the fret ends a bit to smooth out a couple of sharp ones, but still very nice.
It needed new pickups... duh, but the tuners are pretty nice and they don't slip. the v-trem is decent enough, the saddles are solid, not those cheap hollow bent ones.
Overall, a pretty nice guitar for $150.
In the end, a quick pickup swap and some minor fret work and it plays pretty darn good.

I'm certain that mine isn't a Billy "Squire" . It is just a good cheap guitar and plays very well. If you guys see a Squire in a store or pawnshop pick it up and play it. You just might be amazed at how nice those "cheap" guitars are. I think you are old enough to see the junk but some of those are worth the $100 or less.

Well I'm telling you that is how this line started back then. kinda funny considering what it's become.

mine was a cheapie even way back in 1984, and I ended up replacing all of it except the body.

I am waiting for the Seahawks game. So, I'm here. I have to say that this little Strat just sings. I play a lot of my guitars sans amp. This one has so much sustain and sound unplugged that it is quickly becoming my fav. It even sounds good amped. The neck is wonderful and very fast. If you can snag an 8 screw pickguard like this one, do it. It's a true sleeper. And it would make a great guitar for a beginner. And a pleasure to play for a hack like me.
