    any guesses?

and no I don't know what it is. it's heavy. it sounds good. I'm thinking paint-quality maple but I really have no clue.

      It doesn't look like maple.

I agree, definitely not maple... but the grain seems a bit too prominent to be poplar... but that´s still IMO most likely, though

Just how much does that body weigh and what is the thickness of it? It may have more mass than a typical body.

While "true", we need to define what he means when he says "heavy", in the sense of Pounds and ounces. For ex. I consider Les Pauls and Explorers to be "medium" weight, so anything lighter than a strat is definitely "light" to me

And the final weight of the wood also depends on a few other factors than just species, such as how dense the grain is (varies from tree to tree), how well it was dried, and (if it´s currently unfinished) how humid it is where he is this time of year, so it´s not unthinkable for this piece to be atypically hefty

The defined grain structure still bothers me on the Poplar theory, though... most poplar is more "subdued" in texture..... I can´t shake the feeling that I´ve seen this before....

Looks like sanded (duh! ) Poplar to me.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Alder is not that streaky with colors. It has a hint of Poplar but the grain doesn't look right.

The grain does look like ash... maybe the color is a bit off on my monitor.
