  • Strat neck swap question

I have an '89 American Standard Strat w/ a rosewood fretboard. I've always loved the Claption Strat maple neck and was wondering if it would be a problem to swap the neck of mine for a Clapton neck. Will it fit?

Is there a Fender neck with the same profile that maybe wouldn't be as expensive as a genuine Clapton neck?

It should fit as Fender neck pockets are pretty standard.

Cool! Anybody know how the Eric Johnson profile compares to the Clapton? I read that it is a V as well.

you could always buy both and do a side by side comparison. Then write it up here. Consider it a service to your JCF bros.

According to Fender's site, the back profile of the Clapton is 1-Piece Maple, Soft “V” Shape, (Satin Polyurethane Finish) with a 9.5" fingerboard radius.

The EJ model has a 12" fingerboard radius. The neck profile is 1-Piece Quartersawn Maple, Soft “V” Shape, (Nitrocellulose Lacquer Finish).

So basically same shape, different radius, different finish.

Anybody played both? Impressions and comparisons? No LMS has a Clapton or and EJ for me to try out.....

For me the EJ neck is superior to the EC. The EJ has a nice chunky neck carve to it. The EC doesn't feel to different then a small '57 RI to me.

The EJ neck to mee feels more like a fat Gibson neck than a Fender neck.

Something else I just thought of... the EJ model only has 21 frets, the Clapton has 22. Not sure if one missing fret would bug you or not.

Would that affect the neck length or are the frets just a little further apart?

Its the same scale length - the 22nd fret is on a lip. A 21 fret neck ends at the heel - old skool style.

Scale determines the distance between frets not the number of frets. A 25-1/2" scale neck always has the same distance between fret 1 and fret 21 no matter how many frets are on the neck, 21, 22 ,24, 27 ect.

Thanks. I was worried for a sec that this was going to be way more trouble then I wanted.

Anybody know why Fender necks on ebay are so high? Man I'm seeing $400, $500, and $600 just for a neck. That's a lot of coin for just one part of the guitar.

EJ neck is quite meaty EC neck seems to have a sharper V.
Go with a Warmouth or USA customs neck they are a whole lot cheaper and very high quality.
                              Really? well screw Mark Twain.
