I mainly play my 1992 Steinberger GR-4 now although I am still romping the piss out of my old Model 4 mutt and my beat to crap warn out N2. This PRS is my only guitar without a Floyd.
I think of this guitar more as expensive furniture with strings on it.
I might gig with it if we play somewhere REALLY fancy!! You know the type of gig.. the one where the roadies wear tuxedos.
Regarding the floyd - you'd be surprised how much whammy you can do with one if it's set up properly. I'd rate a floyd at 100, PRS at 80, fender strat at about 30%. Seriously, if you just do a dive bomb here and there you'll be able to get away with it.
Pete and JG, how do you like the tone of those guitars?
Extremely open and balanced Fritz. Every position on the 5 position rotary is great. Harmonics jump off of the neck everywhere. Another bright spot is the fact that there are no weak spots on the neck. Every string on every fret is balanced perfectly. I would say that all 24 frets are sweet spots. The overall balance of the guitar whether standing or sitting is perfect. The upper fret access is excellent and the wide/thin neck profile is perfect for any style of playing. You certainly pay alot for these guitars but they are worth every penny.
