  • SG & EMGs

Hi everyone, its been a while since Ive been on the board. I just ordered a Gibson SG Special and was wondering how it would sound if I put a couple of EMGs in it. Anyone who has one or has played or heard one are thanked for there info. Also if I did put EMGs in what would be better two EMG 81s or the Zakk Wylde Signature set.THANX

I had EMG's in my Epiphone SG so I think it would be similar to what you would have. I had an 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck. You could call it the Zakk set, only I bought these pickups many years before there WAS a Zakk set. Anyway, I have to say I loved the way they sounded in it. Great for metal. The only reason I don't have them in there anymore is because I am too cheap to buy another set and I wanted to put EMG's in my Jackson "Franken-Dinky" so I put the stock p/u's back into the SG.

It depends on the type of sound you are looking for, but if you are into metal (of any kind) you won't be disapointed. As a matter of fact, I am considering picking up a Gibson Faded SG this Christmas and I already am considering getting the Zakk set to put in it.

    Hope this helps.

Neither would be better. It's personal preference. The 81 is brighter than the 85, so I tend to like the 85 better in the bridge with an 81 in the neck.

Thanx for the info, the SG came in yesterday and I can say im loving it, well worth the money. Im also wanting to get some new tuners, what would be some good ones to put in this bad boy so it doesnt slip out of tune. Yes I am into METAL, that is mainly all I play. I am lead guitarist if that helps with the EMG question.

I know you are asking about EMG's, but give the Gibson Iommi's a look. They are in my Custom Shop 62 reissue and they just SCREAM metal. A great choice for lead playing.

I have the Zakky set in a older SG, pretty good sound for
metal. But I'm thinking of going back to Dimarzio SD's for
            more tone.

Is that a 70's era SG? I am going by the fret markers here.

Ive decided to go with the Zakk set. Does anyone have any ideas on ordering a new set of these off of ebay would be or would it be better to save the little extra bit of money and buy them from a guitar shop.
